Planting Freesia Double Mixed

• Plant overview: Freesia Double Mixed produces beautifully scented, double-flowered blooms in a wide range of vibrant colours. These elegant flowers are highly valued for borders, containers, and cut flower displays, where their fragrance and long-lasting blooms can be fully appreciated.

• When to plant:

  • Plant corms in spring (March to April) once the risk of frost has passed.

  • In mild, frost-free conditions, they can also be grown under glass or in containers started earlier indoors.

• Site selection:

  • Choose a warm, bright position in full sun or light partial shade.

  • Shelter from strong winds helps protect the delicate flower stems.

• Soil preparation:

  • Freesias prefer light, fertile, well-drained soil.

  • Improve heavier soils with grit or sharp sand and add garden compost to boost fertility.

• Planting depth and spacing:

  • Plant corms 5–7cm deep, with the pointed tip facing upwards.

  • Space corms 5–10cm apart for a full, colourful display.

• Container planting:

  • Ideal for pots and patio containers.

  • Use a free-draining compost and ensure containers have good drainage holes.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water well after planting, then keep soil evenly moist during active growth.

  • Avoid overwatering, as waterlogged soil can cause corm rot.

• Feeding:

  • Feed every 2–3 weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser once buds begin to form.

  • Regular feeding promotes strong stems and abundant flowering.

• Support:

  • Freesia stems can be slender and may need support as they grow.

  • Use small canes or twiggy supports to keep flower spikes upright.

• Weed control:

  • Keep the area free of weeds, especially early in the growing season.

  • Take care when weeding to avoid damaging shallow roots.

• Deadheading:

  • Remove spent flowers regularly to maintain a tidy appearance and extend flowering.

• Pests and diseases:

  • Watch for aphids on young growth and treat promptly if required.

  • Ensure good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal problems.

Flowering, Aftercare, and Storage

• Flowering period:

  • Spring-planted Freesia Double Mixed typically flowers from early to mid-summer.

  • Blooms open gradually along the stem, providing a long flowering period.

• Cut flower use:

  • Freesias are excellent cut flowers with a strong, sweet fragrance.

  • Cut stems early in the morning when the first flowers begin to open for best vase life.

• After flowering:

  • Allow foliage to remain in place after flowering until it naturally yellows and dies back.

  • This allows the corms to store energy for the following season.

• Winter care:

  • Freesias are half-hardy and will not tolerate hard frost.

  • In colder areas, lift corms once foliage has died back.

• Lifting and storage:

  • Carefully lift corms, remove excess soil, and dry thoroughly.

  • Store in paper bags or trays in a cool, dry, frost-free place.

• Overwintering in containers:

  • Containers can be moved into a greenhouse or frost-free shed for winter.

  • Keep compost barely moist during dormancy.

• Replanting:

  • Replant stored corms the following spring for another season of colour and fragrance.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
