Description

Overview and Features

Gaura is a graceful, long-flowering perennial known for its airy structure and delicate, butterfly-like blooms. The flowers appear on tall, wiry stems and open successively over many weeks, giving a soft, dancing appearance in borders or containers.

Gaura comes in a range of varieties and colours, including:

  • White-flowered types like ‘Whirling Butterflies’

  • Pink-flowered forms like ‘Siskiyou Pink’ or ‘Rosy Jane’

  • Compact cultivars such as ‘Belleza Pink’ or ‘Gaudi Red’

These varieties vary slightly in size but share similar growing requirements and ornamental value. They flower from early summer through autumn, offering continuous interest, especially in cottage gardens, prairie borders, Mediterranean-style planting, or wildlife-friendly beds.

  • Height range: 40 cm (dwarf) to 1.2 m (tall varieties)

  • Colours: White, blush pink, rose, bicolour

  • Light, arching stems with narrow lance-shaped foliage

  • Excellent for movement and lightness in planting designs

  • Attracts bees and butterflies

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Gaura is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant that thrives in sunny, free-draining locations.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Best grown in full sun (6+ hours daily)

    • Will tolerate light shade, but flowers more sparsely

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Prefers light, well-drained soils

    • Tolerates chalky, sandy, or loamy soils

    • Avoid heavy clay or waterlogged sites

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly until established

    • Once mature, very drought-tolerant

    • In containers, water when topsoil becomes dry

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring

    • Overfeeding may result in leggy growth with fewer flowers

  • Pruning and Maintenance:

    • Deadhead regularly or shear lightly to encourage reblooming

    • Cut back to 15 cm in autumn or early spring to refresh the plant

    • Divide clumps every 3–4 years if needed

Seasonal Display and Garden Uses

Gaura adds texture, movement, and subtle colour from summer into autumn. It is highly versatile in landscape design and particularly useful in low-maintenance and wildlife gardens.

  • Flowering Season:

    • Blooms from late May or June until October

  • Garden Design Applications:

    • Perfect for prairie-style planting, borders, raised beds, and containers

    • Effective in gravel gardens, Mediterranean borders, and pollinator gardens

    • Ideal as a filler between shrubs or to soften edges of hard landscaping

  • Companion Plants:

    • Combine with Verbena bonariensis, Salvia, Echinacea, Stipa tenuissima, Lavender, and Rudbeckia

    • Contrasts beautifully with silver or burgundy foliage

  • Pest and Disease Resistance:

    • Generally pest-free and disease-resistant

    • May suffer from root rot in wet, heavy soils
