Gaura lindheimeri White – 2 Litre Pot – Planting & Care Guide

About Gaura lindheimeri White

Gaura lindheimeri White, also known as White Gaura or Beeblossom, is a graceful, long-flowering herbaceous perennial producing masses of delicate white, butterfly-like flowers on slender, airy stems.

Flowering for an exceptionally long period from early summer well into autumn, Gaura adds movement and a light, natural appearance to borders. The flowers dance gently in the breeze and are attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Growing to approximately 60–100cm tall with a spread of around 40–60cm, it is particularly effective when planted among ornamental grasses and other informal summer-flowering perennials.

Supplied in a 2 litre pot.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun for the best flowering.
  • Choose an open, reasonably sheltered position.
  • Prefers fertile but well-drained soil.
  • Particularly dislikes heavy, waterlogged ground during winter.
  • Improve heavy clay soils with organic matter and horticultural grit.
  • Dig a planting hole approximately twice the width of the root ball.
  • Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its pot.
  • Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Avoid burying the crown too deeply.
  • Space plants approximately 40–60cm apart.

Care & Maintenance

Gaura is relatively drought tolerant once established and requires little maintenance.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Avoid excessive watering, particularly during winter.
  • Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertiliser.
  • Avoid excessive feeding, which can produce soft, floppy growth.
  • Container-grown plants require more frequent watering during warm weather.
  • Good drainage is essential for successful overwintering.

Pruning

A little pruning helps keep Gaura compact and encourages repeat flowering.

  • Regularly remove faded flower stems if desired.
  • Plants can be lightly trimmed during summer if they become excessively tall or untidy.
  • A midsummer trim can encourage fresh growth and another flush of flowers.
  • Leave the main stems in place over winter to provide some protection to the crown.
  • Cut old growth back in early to mid-spring once new shoots begin to appear.
  • Avoid cutting plants hard back in autumn.

Ideal Uses in the Garden

The airy growth of White Gaura makes it particularly useful for adding movement without creating a heavy block of foliage.

  • Prairie-style planting
  • Coastal gardens
  • Wildlife gardens
  • Pollinator-friendly planting
  • Large patio containers
  • Contemporary gardens
  • Informal planting schemes

It combines beautifully with Verbena bonariensis, Nepeta, Salvia, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Agapanthus, Lavender and ornamental grasses.

Seasonal Interest

  • Fresh foliage develops during spring.
  • Slender flowering stems begin appearing in early summer.
  • Masses of delicate white flowers continue throughout summer and into autumn.
  • The flowers sway attractively in the breeze, adding movement to planting schemes.
  • Flowers provide nectar for bees and other beneficial pollinating insects.

Common Problems

Gaura is generally healthy when grown in suitable conditions.

  • Winter waterlogging is the main cause of plant losses.
  • Heavy, poorly drained soil can cause crown and root rot.
  • Plants can become floppy when grown in excessive shade or overly fertile soil.
  • Slugs and snails may occasionally damage fresh spring shoots.
  • Severe winter weather can damage plants in cold, exposed locations.
  • Avoid disturbing established plants unnecessarily, as Gaura develops a deep root system and does not always respond well to transplanting.

With its delicate white flowers, exceptionally long flowering season and graceful airy habit, Gaura lindheimeri White is an excellent perennial for Irish gardens. Supplied in a 2 litre pot, it is ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting where it provides months of movement and colour from early summer until the first autumn frosts
