Geranium macrorrhizum 'Spessart' – Planting & Care Guide

About Geranium macrorrhizum 'Spessart'

Geranium macrorrhizum 'Spessart', commonly known as Bigroot Cranesbill, is a vigorous, evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial prized for its fragrant foliage, elegant white flowers and excellent ground-covering habit. In late spring and early summer, clusters of delicate white flowers with soft pink buds are held above aromatic, deeply lobed green leaves, creating a fresh and natural display.

Growing to approximately 25–35cm tall with a spread of 60–90cm, 'Spessart' quickly forms a dense carpet of foliage that helps suppress weeds, making it ideal for low-maintenance gardens. The leaves release a pleasant aromatic scent when touched and often develop attractive shades of bronze and red during autumn, extending its seasonal interest. It is highly tolerant of dry shade once established, making it one of the most versatile hardy geraniums for Irish gardens.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun, partial shade or full shade.
  • Performs especially well beneath trees and shrubs.
  • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but adapts to most soil types.
  • Suitable for loam, sandy, clay and chalky soils.
  • Improve poor soils by incorporating compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a light layer of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture during establishment.
  • Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart for effective ground cover.

Care & Maintenance

Geranium macrorrhizum 'Spessart' is exceptionally easy to grow and requires very little maintenance.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods.
  • Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Refresh mulch annually to improve soil fertility and conserve moisture.
  • Remove weeds until plants have fully established.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently during warm weather.
  • Established plants tolerate dry shade very well.
