• Plant Type: Evergreen shrub or small tree

• Origin: Native to New Zealand, valued for its tolerance to coastal conditions and strong winds.

• Growth Habit: Dense, bushy habit with an upright to spreading form, reaching 4–8 metres in height if left untrimmed, though usually maintained at 1.5–4 metres for hedging.

• Foliage: Glossy, bright green, leathery oval leaves that provide year-round interest and privacy.

• Flowers: Small, inconspicuous yellow-green blooms in spring, occasionally followed by small purple fruits on female plants when a male plant is nearby.

• Seasonal Interest: Evergreen structure provides consistent screening and colour through all seasons.

• Garden Uses: Popular for hedging, windbreaks, coastal gardens, and evergreen backdrops. Also effective as a standalone specimen.

• Wildlife Benefits: Dense foliage offers shelter for birds and pollinators; berries (on female plants) attract birds.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade; performs best with at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.

• Soil Preferences: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil but is adaptable to most soil types, including sandy and clay soils.

• pH Range: Neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 6.5–8.0).

• Moisture Needs: Moist but well-drained conditions are ideal; avoid prolonged waterlogging.

• Planting Time: Best planted in autumn or spring to allow roots to establish before temperature extremes.

• Spacing: For hedging, space plants 60–90 cm apart; for specimens, allow 1.5–2 metres or more.

• Shelter Needs: Exceptionally tolerant of wind, salt spray, and coastal exposure, making it a top choice for seaside locations.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots.

  • Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry periods.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy leaf colour and dense growth.

• Pruning:

  • For hedges, trim 2–3 times during the growing season (late spring to early autumn) to maintain shape and density.

  • For specimen plants, prune lightly to remove damaged or straggly shoots.

• Mulching: Apply a 5 cm mulch layer of compost or bark around the base in spring to retain moisture, enrich the soil, and suppress weeds.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free; occasional scale insects may appear but rarely cause significant harm.

• Winter Care: Hardy in mild to moderate climates; in colder inland areas, plant in sheltered spots to protect from severe frost.

• Weed Control: Keep the base clear of weeds and grass to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

• Longevity: Long-lived and low-maintenance once established, providing year-round structure and privacy for decades.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
