Hebe Donna® 'Jenna' – Planting & Care Guide

About Hebe Donna® 'Jenna'

Hebe Donna® 'Jenna' is a compact, evergreen shrub valued for its glossy foliage and abundance of colourful flower spikes that bloom throughout summer and into early autumn. Its naturally rounded, bushy habit makes it an excellent choice for adding year-round structure and long-lasting colour to gardens of all sizes.

Part of the premium Donna® Collection, 'Jenna' has been bred for outstanding garden performance, compact growth and prolific flowering. It typically grows to approximately 50–70cm tall with a spread of 50–70cm, making it ideal for borders, patio containers, rockeries and low-maintenance planting schemes. The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun or partial shade.
  • Choose a sheltered position protected from strong, cold winds.
  • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Suitable for loam, sandy and chalky soils.
  • Improve heavy clay soils with compost and horticultural grit before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the stems.
  • Space plants approximately 50–70cm apart to allow room for mature growth.

Care & Maintenance

Hebe Donna® 'Jenna' is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub that performs well with minimal care.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging, especially during winter.
  • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Refresh mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Remove weeds regularly from around the base.
  • Deadhead faded flower spikes to encourage continued blooming.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently during warm weather.
  • Protect young plants from severe winter weather in exposed gardens.

Pruning

Regular light pruning helps maintain a compact, bushy shape.

  • Trim lightly after the main flowering period.
  • Remove spent flower spikes to encourage repeat flowering.
  • Remove any dead, damaged or diseased stems.
  • Avoid cutting back into old woody stems, as Hebes may not regenerate well from mature wood.
  • Light annual pruning promotes dense growth and abundant flowers.
