    Description

    Planting Hebe ‘Emerald Green’

    • Site and position

      • Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot; full sun gives the tightest, brightest green bun shape.

      • Shelter from cold, drying winds, especially in very exposed or inland gardens.

      • Ideal for borders, gravel gardens, rockeries and low edging along paths.

    • Soil preparation

      • Prefers moist but well-drained soil; avoid spots that sit wet over winter.

      • Suitable for light, sandy or loamy soils and will usually cope with mild lime.

      • Before planting, dig in garden compost or well-rotted manure to improve structure.

      • On heavier clay, work in coarse grit or sand to boost drainage around the root zone.

    • Planting in the ground

      • Space plants about 30–40 cm apart; they naturally form compact domes that will slowly knit together.

      • Dig a hole just wider than the pot and of similar depth.

      • Gently tease out any circling roots and place the plant so the top of the rootball is level with the surrounding soil.

      • Backfill, firm lightly with your hands and water thoroughly to settle the soil.

      • Add a thin mulch of compost or bark, keeping it away from direct contact with the stems.

    • Planting in containers

      • Use a peat-free, loam-based compost with added grit for stability and drainage.

      • Ensure containers have large drainage holes and a layer of crocks or stones in the base.

      • Plant singly in small pots for neat “green pompoms”, or in groups for low, evergreen structure.

      • Water well after planting and position in a bright, open spot.

    Ongoing Care and Maintenance

    • Watering

      • Keep newly planted hebes evenly moist for the first growing season.

      • Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, giving a deep soak rather than frequent light sprinkles.

      • Container plants dry out faster; check regularly and water when the top few centimetres of compost feel dry.

    • Feeding

      • In borders, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support compact, fresh growth.

      • In pots, top-dress each spring by scraping away the top few centimetres of compost and replacing with fresh, enriched compost.

      • Avoid heavy feeding late in summer, which can encourage soft growth more vulnerable to frost.

    • Pruning and shaping

      • Naturally forms a tight, rounded dome, so only light trimming is needed.

      • After flowering (small white flowers in summer on some plants), lightly shear over to maintain a crisp outline.

      • Remove any dead, damaged or winter-burned shoots in early spring, cutting back to healthy foliage.

      • Avoid cutting into old, bare wood, as regrowth from this may be poor.

    • General health

      • Maintain good airflow by not crowding with taller, dense shrubs.

      • Keep the base weed-free so the compact habit can be seen and air can circulate around the plant.

Problems, Winter Care and Design Tips

    • Hardiness and winter care

      • Generally hardy in mild and coastal climates, but young or potted plants appreciate extra protection.

      • In very cold spells, move containers to a sheltered wall or wrap pots in fleece or hessian.

      • Ensure drainage is excellent in winter; cold, waterlogged soil is far more damaging than dry cold.

    • Pests and diseases

      • Usually trouble-free; occasionally aphids may appear on tender tips, which can be squashed or washed off.

      • Prolonged damp and poor airflow can encourage leaf spot or mildew; thin surrounding plants and avoid overhead watering.

      • Remove any badly affected shoots and dispose of them rather than composting.

    • Keeping plants looking good long term

      • Expect an eventual size of around 30–50 cm high and wide, forming a dense, cushion-like mound.

      • If an older plant becomes woody or uneven, lightly trim over a couple of times in the season to thicken it, or replace with a young specimen.

      • Combine with contrasting textures such as gravel, boulders, heathers, dwarf conifers and grasses to show off the tight, architectural “green globe” form all year round
