Planting Hebe ‘Little Red Rum’
Hebe ‘Little Red Rum’ is a compact, evergreen shrub valued for its colourful foliage and neat growth habit. Its small leaves often display tones of green, red and purple, especially in cooler weather, making it a great choice for year-round interest in borders and containers.
Choosing the right position
- Prefers full sun for the best foliage colour
- Will tolerate light partial shade, though colour may be less intense
- Choose a sheltered spot, protected from strong winds
- Ideal for borders, rockeries, coastal gardens, or containers
- Suitable for smaller gardens due to its compact size
Soil requirements
- Thrives in well-drained soil
- Suitable for sandy or loamy soils
- Does not tolerate heavy, waterlogged ground
- Prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil
- Improve drainage by adding grit or organic matter if needed
How to plant in the ground
- Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and similar depth
- Loosen the soil at the base to encourage root growth
- Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface
- Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly
- Apply a light mulch around the base to help retain moisture
Planting in containers
- Choose a pot with good drainage holes
- Use a free-draining compost, such as a multi-purpose mix with added grit
- Select a container slightly larger than the root ball
- Water well after planting and allow excess water to drain
- Place in a sunny, sheltered position
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
Hebe ‘Little Red Rum’ is easy to care for and requires minimal attention once established, making it a popular choice for low-maintenance gardens.
Watering
- Water regularly during the first growing season
- Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant
- Water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in summer
- Container-grown plants require more frequent watering
- Avoid overwatering, especially in cooler months
Feeding
- Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth
- Container plants can be fed with a liquid fertiliser during the growing season
- Avoid excessive feeding, which can lead to soft, leggy growth
- Annual mulching with compost can help improve soil fertility
Pruning
- Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape
- Remove any dead, damaged, or leggy growth
- Avoid cutting back into old wood, as regrowth may be slow
- Regular light pruning encourages bushier growth
- Use clean, sharp tools for best results
Mulching
- Apply a light mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds
- Ensure mulch does not touch the base of the plant
- Helps maintain even soil conditions throughout the year
Seasonal Care and Common Issues
With proper care, Hebe ‘Little Red Rum’ will provide attractive foliage colour throughout the year and occasional summer flowers.
Winter care
- Hardy in mild climates but may need protection in colder areas
- Protect from cold, drying winds which can damage foliage
- In colder regions, consider covering with horticultural fleece during severe frost
- Container plants can be moved to a sheltered position in winter
- Ensure good drainage to prevent root damage in wet conditions
Maintaining colour and growth
- Best foliage colour develops in full sun
- Cooler temperatures often intensify red and purple tones
- Avoid overly shaded positions, which can lead to duller foliage
- Consistent care helps maintain a dense, compact habit
Common problems
- Leaf drop or browning may be caused by cold winds or waterlogging
- Poor growth can result from heavy, poorly drained soil
- Leggy growth may occur if the plant is not pruned regularly
- Generally pest-free, though occasional aphids may appear
- Root rot can occur in persistently wet conditions
Hebe ‘Little Red Rum’ is a versatile and colourful shrub that brings year-round interest to a wide range of garden settings. Its compact size makes it ideal for borders, containers, and smaller spaces, while its vibrant foliage adds seasonal variation. With well-drained soil, a sunny position, and light maintenance, it will thrive and provide lasting visual appeal.
