Planting Hebe pinguifolia ‘Pagei’
Hebe pinguifolia ‘Pagei’ is a compact, low-growing evergreen shrub with attractive blue-grey foliage and a neat, spreading habit. It is ideal for adding texture and subtle colour to borders, rockeries, and containers, and works particularly well in modern or coastal garden designs.
Choosing the right position
- Prefers full sun for the best colour and compact growth
- Tolerates light partial shade, though may become slightly looser in habit
- Choose a sheltered spot, protected from strong, cold winds
- Ideal for rockeries, gravel gardens, borders, or containers
- Suitable for coastal gardens due to good tolerance of salt air
Soil requirements
- Requires well-drained soil to thrive
- Performs well in sandy or loamy soils
- Does not tolerate heavy, waterlogged conditions
- Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil
- Improve drainage by adding grit or horticultural sand before planting
How to plant in the ground
- Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and similar depth
- Loosen the soil at the base to encourage root growth
- Position the plant so the top of the root ball sits level with the soil surface
- Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly
- Apply a light mulch of gravel or organic matter to retain moisture
Planting in containers
- Choose a pot with good drainage holes
- Use a free-draining compost, such as multi-purpose with added grit
- Select a container slightly larger than the root ball
- Water well after planting and allow excess water to drain
- Place in a sunny, sheltered position for best performance
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
Hebe pinguifolia ‘Pagei’ is low maintenance and easy to grow, making it a great choice for gardeners seeking reliable structure with minimal effort.
Watering
- Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots
- Once established, it is fairly drought tolerant
- Water during prolonged dry periods, especially in summer
- Container-grown plants will need more frequent watering
- Avoid overwatering, particularly in cooler months
Feeding
- Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth
- Container plants benefit from occasional liquid feeding during the growing season
- Annual mulching with compost can improve soil fertility
- Avoid excessive feeding, which may lead to soft, leggy growth
Pruning
- Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a neat, compact shape
- Remove any dead, damaged, or leggy growth as needed
- Avoid cutting back into old wood, as regrowth may be slow
- Regular light pruning encourages dense, bushy growth
- Use clean, sharp tools to prevent damage
Mulching
- Apply a light mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds
- Gravel mulch works well in drier or gravel-style gardens
- Keep mulch away from the base of the plant to prevent rot
Seasonal Care and Common Issues
With the right conditions, Hebe pinguifolia ‘Pagei’ will provide year-round structure and subtle colour in the garden.
Winter care
- Hardy in mild climates but may need protection in colder or exposed areas
- Protect from cold, drying winds which can damage foliage
- In severe frost, cover with horticultural fleece if necessary
- Container plants can be moved to a sheltered position during winter
- Ensure soil remains free-draining to prevent root damage
Maintaining appearance
- Foliage retains its blue-grey colour throughout the year
- Best colour and compact growth occur in full sun
- Too much shade can lead to a looser habit and less vibrant foliage
- Occasional light trimming helps maintain a tidy shape
Common problems
- Browning or leaf drop may be caused by cold winds or waterlogged soil
- Root rot can occur if planted in poorly drained conditions
- Leggy growth may result from insufficient light or lack of pruning
- Generally pest-free, though aphids may occasionally appear
- Poor growth is often linked to heavy soil or excess moisture
Hebe pinguifolia ‘Pagei’ is a versatile and attractive shrub that adds structure and soft colour to a wide range of garden settings. Its compact size and low-maintenance nature make it ideal for borders, containers, and gravel gardens. With a sunny position, well-drained soil, and minimal care, it will thrive and provide lasting visual interest throughout .
