Planting Hebe ‘Pink Candy’
Hebe ‘Pink Candy’ is a compact, evergreen shrub admired for its glossy green foliage and soft pink flower spikes that appear in summer. Its neat growth habit and long flowering period make it a great addition to borders, containers, and smaller garden spaces.
Choosing the right position
- Prefers a full sun position for best flowering and compact growth
- Will tolerate light partial shade, though flowering may be reduced
- Choose a sheltered spot, protected from strong winds
- Ideal for borders, patios, and container planting
- Suitable for coastal gardens due to good tolerance of salty air
Soil requirements
- Thrives in well-drained soil
- Suitable for sandy or loamy soils
- Does not perform well in heavy, waterlogged conditions
- Prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil
- Improve drainage by incorporating grit or organic matter before planting
How to plant in the ground
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and similar depth
- Loosen the soil at the base of the hole
- Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface
- Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly
- Apply a light mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds
Planting in containers
- Use a pot with good drainage holes
- Fill with a free-draining compost, such as multi-purpose with added grit
- Choose a container slightly larger than the root ball
- Water well after planting and allow excess water to drain
- Place in a sunny, sheltered position
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
Hebe ‘Pink Candy’ is low maintenance and easy to grow, making it a reliable choice for adding colour and structure to the garden.
Watering
- Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots
- Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant
- Water during prolonged dry periods, particularly in summer
- Container-grown plants require more frequent watering
- Avoid overwatering, especially in cooler months
Feeding
- Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth
- Container plants benefit from occasional liquid feeding during the growing season
- Annual mulching with compost helps improve soil fertility
- Avoid excessive feeding, which can lead to soft, leggy growth
Pruning and deadheading
- Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a neat shape
- Remove spent flower spikes to encourage further blooms
- Remove any dead, damaged, or leggy growth
- Avoid cutting back into old wood, as regrowth may be slow
- Regular light pruning encourages bushier growth
Mulching
- Apply a light mulch in spring to help retain moisture
- Suppresses weeds and maintains even soil conditions
- Keep mulch away from the base of the plant
Seasonal Care and Common Issues
With the right care, Hebe ‘Pink Candy’ will provide attractive foliage and colourful blooms throughout the growing season.
Winter care
- Hardy in mild climates but may need protection in colder or exposed areas
- Protect from cold, drying winds which can damage foliage
- In severe frost, cover with horticultural fleece if necessary
- Container plants can be moved to a sheltered position during winter
- Ensure soil remains well-drained to prevent root damage
Encouraging flowering
- Best flowering occurs in full sun
- Regular deadheading promotes repeat blooms
- Consistent watering during dry periods supports flowering
- Avoid excessive shade, which can reduce flower production
Common problems
- Browning leaves may be caused by cold winds or poor drainage
- Root rot can occur in persistently wet soil
- Leggy growth may result from lack of light or insufficient pruning
- Generally pest-free, though aphids may occasionally appear
- Poor flowering is often linked to too much shade or lack of feeding
Hebe ‘Pink Candy’ is a charming and versatile shrub that adds long-lasting colour to the garden. Its compact size makes it ideal for borders, containers, and smaller spaces, while its soft pink flowers bring seasonal interest. With well-drained soil, a sunny position, and minimal maintenance, it will thrive and provide reliable performance year after year.
