Planting Hebe topiaria

Hebe topiaria is a compact evergreen shrub valued for its small grey-green leaves, naturally rounded shape and delicate white summer flowers. Its tidy growth makes it suitable for gravel gardens, coastal planting, border edges, low hedging and containers. Although its name suggests clipped topiary, it naturally forms a neat mound and normally requires only minimal shaping.

• Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade. Strong light encourages dense growth, silvery foliage and reliable flowering.

• Select a sheltered location protected from severe frost and cold, drying winds. A position near a wall or among other shrubs can provide useful winter protection.

• Hebe topiaria is well suited to coastal gardens because it tolerates salt-laden air, provided the soil drains freely.

• Plant in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It adapts to loam, chalk and sandy conditions but dislikes heavy, permanently wet ground.

• Improve compacted soil with organic matter and horticultural grit. On clay, consider planting slightly above the surrounding ground level to improve drainage.

• Water the plant thoroughly before removing it from its container. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than its existing height.

• Position the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously.

• Apply a 5 cm layer of composted bark or fine gravel around the root area, keeping it away from the stems.

• For containers, use peat-free shrub compost mixed with grit and select a frost-resistant pot with unobstructed drainage holes.

Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care

Hebe topiaria is reasonably drought tolerant after establishment, but young and container-grown plants need regular attention. Good drainage is especially important during cold, wet weather.

• Water consistently during the first growing season. Allow the soil surface to dry slightly between thorough waterings.

• Apply water directly around the root zone instead of repeatedly wetting the foliage and flowers.

• Continue watering established plants during prolonged hot, dry or windy conditions. Extended drought may cause brown leaf tips and premature leaf drop.

• Check container plants frequently in summer because compost can dry rapidly. Water thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the bottom.

• Empty saucers and decorative outer pots promptly. Roots left standing in water are vulnerable to rot.

• Reduce watering during autumn and winter, but do not allow container compost to remain completely dry for long periods.

• Apply a balanced, slow-release shrub fertiliser in spring if growth appears weak. Plants in reasonably fertile garden soil need little additional feeding.

• Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which encourage soft, vulnerable growth and can spoil the plant’s naturally compact form.

• Renew the mulch annually to retain moisture, suppress weeds and protect the shallow roots.

• During prolonged freezing weather, move containers to a sheltered outdoor position and insulate the pots. Avoid bringing the plant into a heated room.

Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

Hebe topiaria develops a naturally rounded outline and should not require heavy pruning. Light trimming preserves its shape and encourages dense, healthy foliage.

• Carry out any routine pruning after flowering, generally in late summer, while sufficient time remains for new growth to mature before winter.

• Remove dead, damaged, diseased or frost-blackened shoots with clean, sharp secateurs.

• Wait until spring growth begins before cutting away winter damage. Living buds may remain lower on stems that initially appear dead.

• Lightly trim the outer shoots to refine the rounded shape. Step back regularly and assess the plant from several angles.

• Avoid cutting deeply into old, bare wood because mature hebes may not regenerate reliably from leafless stems.

• Remove faded flower spikes if a tidier appearance is desired. Deadheading may also encourage the shrub to direct energy towards fresh foliage.

• Maintain good airflow around the plant by preventing neighbouring shrubs from growing over it.

• Inspect the foliage periodically for aphids, scale insects and spider mites, particularly on plants growing in sheltered containers.

• Brown or blackened leaves can result from frost, waterlogging, drought or cold wind. Review the growing conditions before applying fertiliser.

• Yellowing and wilting despite moist soil may indicate poor drainage or root damage. Allow the soil to dry and improve drainage where possible.

• Repot container-grown specimens every two or three years, using fresh, free-draining compost and a pot only slightly larger than the previous one.

• With full sun, sharp drainage, moderate watering and gentle trimming, Hebe topiaria will provide attractive evergreen foliage, summer flowers and a naturally formal shape throughout the year

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
