Helichrysum italicum – Curry Plant – Planting & Care Guide
About Helichrysum italicum
Helichrysum italicum, commonly known as the Curry Plant, is a compact evergreen Mediterranean shrub grown for its beautiful silvery-grey foliage, distinctive fragrance and clusters of small yellow summer flowers.
The narrow, aromatic leaves release a strong curry-like scent when touched or warmed by the sun, giving the plant its familiar common name. Despite the fragrance, it is not the plant used to make curry powder and is primarily grown as an ornamental and aromatic garden plant.
Its silver foliage provides excellent year-round contrast and makes Helichrysum italicum particularly attractive in gravel gardens, Mediterranean-style planting, containers and sunny borders.
Planting Guide
- Choose a warm position in full sun.
- Plant in light, very well-drained soil.
- Sandy, gritty and relatively poor soils are particularly suitable.
- Avoid heavy, wet or waterlogged ground.
- Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball.
- Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its pot.
- Firm gently and water thoroughly after planting.
- Once established, avoid excessive watering.
In heavier Irish soils, improve drainage with horticultural grit or consider growing the plant in a raised bed or container.
Planting in Containers
Curry Plant grows particularly well in pots where drainage can be easily controlled.
- Choose a container with plenty of drainage holes.
- Use a free-draining compost with added horticultural grit.
- Position in the sunniest available location.
- Water when the compost begins to dry.
- Never leave the pot permanently standing in water.
- Raise containers on pot feet during wet winter weather if necessary.
Terracotta pots are particularly suitable because they allow excess moisture to evaporate more readily.
Care & Maintenance
Helichrysum italicum is a relatively low-maintenance plant once established.
- Water regularly during the initial establishment period.
- Once established, it has good drought tolerance.
- Avoid overwatering.
- Little feeding is required.
- Plants grown in excessively rich soil may become soft and less compact.
- Protect from prolonged winter wet, especially in heavy soils.
Pruning
Regular light pruning helps maintain a neat, compact shape.
- Lightly trim plants in spring to encourage bushy new growth.
- Remove dead or damaged stems.
- A further light trim can be carried out after flowering if necessary.
- Avoid cutting severely into old, bare woody growth.
- Do not prune heavily during cold or very wet winter weather.

Fragrance & Flowers
One of the most distinctive features of Helichrysum italicum is its strongly aromatic foliage. Brushing against the leaves releases a warm fragrance reminiscent of curry and herbs.
During summer, the plant produces clusters of small yellow button-like flowers held above the silver foliage. The flowers can also be dried and are part of the reason the genus is sometimes associated with the name Everlasting Flower.
Wildlife & Pollinator Value
The summer flowers can attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects, making Curry Plant a useful addition to sunny pollinator-friendly planting schemes.
Its preference for dry, sunny conditions makes it particularly useful alongside other Mediterranean plants that provide nectar throughout summer.
Seasonal Interest
Spring: Fresh silver-grey shoots develop as temperatures rise.
Summer: Aromatic foliage is joined by clusters of yellow flowers.
Autumn: The evergreen silver foliage continues providing colour and texture.
Winter: Foliage remains attractive, although plants benefit from protection against excessive winter wet.
Common Problems
- Waterlogging is the most significant problem, particularly during Irish winters.
- Heavy clay soil can cause root deterioration unless drainage is improved.
- Excessive watering can cause poor growth or root rot.
- Plants may become woody and untidy if never lightly pruned.
- Severe cold combined with wet soil can cause damage.
- Excessively fertile conditions can encourage soft, floppy growth.
With its beautiful silver-grey foliage, distinctive curry-like fragrance and cheerful yellow summer flowers, Helichrysum italicum is an excellent plant for warm, sunny and well-drained positions. Its drought tolerance and Mediterranean appearance make it especially attractive in containers, gravel gardens, raised beds and sunny Irish borders where drainage is good
