Planting Helleborus ‘Angel Glow’

Helleborus ‘Angel Glow’ is a compact evergreen perennial valued for its outward-facing winter and early spring flowers. The blooms open pale pink and gradually deepen as they mature, creating an attractive range of tones on one plant. Its leathery, silvery green foliage provides structure beyond the flowering period. This hellebore is well suited to shaded borders, woodland gardens, courtyards and outdoor containers.

• Choose a position in partial or dappled shade. Gentle winter sunlight is beneficial, but protection from intense summer sun helps prevent scorched foliage and dry soil.
• Select a sheltered site away from strong, cold or drying winds. Severe exposure can mark the leaves and damage open flowers.
• Plant in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. ‘Angel Glow’ can grow in clay, loam or chalk when drainage and soil structure are suitable.
• Avoid low areas that remain waterlogged after rain. Persistently saturated soil can damage the roots and encourage crown rot.
• Improve poor ground with well-rotted compost, leaf mould or another mature organic soil conditioner before planting.
• Water the plant thoroughly in its original pot. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than its existing height.
• Position the crown level with the surrounding soil. Planting too deeply may reduce flowering and trap moisture around the growing point.
• Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously. Apply a light layer of organic mulch, leaving the crown and emerging shoots uncovered.
• For containers, use a deep, frost-resistant pot with drainage holes and good-quality peat-free compost mixed with horticultural grit.

Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care

Helleborus ‘Angel Glow’ prefers consistent moisture without prolonged saturation. Regular watering during establishment supports strong roots and dependable flowering in future seasons.

• Water newly planted specimens regularly during the first growing season. Direct the water towards the soil rather than repeatedly soaking the foliage and flowers.
• Established plants tolerate brief dry periods, but extended drought may weaken growth and reduce the formation of flower buds.
• Check container plants frequently because compost can dry quickly during bright, windy or warm conditions. Dense foliage may also divert rainfall away from the pot.
• Water containers thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the base. Empty saucers and decorative outer containers promptly.
• Reduce watering during cool, wet weather, but never leave container-grown plants completely dry for long periods.
• Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring or immediately after flowering. Use the recommended amount to avoid overly soft foliage.
• Top-dress established plants with well-rotted compost or leaf mould in autumn or spring to improve the soil gradually.
• Renew the mulch each year to retain moisture, suppress weeds and protect the shallow roots from changing temperatures.
• Insulate containers during prolonged freezing weather. Open flowers may benefit from temporary protection against heavy snow or exceptionally severe frost.

Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

‘Angel Glow’ needs little pruning because it naturally forms a compact clump. Selective removal of ageing or damaged foliage preserves its ornamental appearance and helps reduce disease.

• Cut away old, collapsed, damaged or heavily spotted leaves as flower stems begin to emerge, usually between late autumn and early spring.
• Retain healthy foliage when it remains attractive. Unlike some hellebores, the leaves can form an important part of the winter display.
• Use clean, sharp secateurs and check beneath the foliage for hidden buds before making each cut.
• Wear gloves when handling the plant because hellebore sap may irritate the skin. All parts are harmful if eaten.
• Remove faded flower stems near their base if a neat appearance is required. Deadheading also prevents the plant from directing energy into seed production.
• Seedlings may not reproduce the exact flower colour or growth habit of the named parent, so remove seed heads if maintaining the cultivar is important.
• Clear cut foliage and fallen flowers from around the crown. Good hygiene helps limit hellebore leaf spot and grey mould.
• Inspect young shoots for aphids and check around the crown for slugs and snails.
• Watch for black streaks, rings or severely distorted growth, which may indicate viral disease. Remove seriously affected plants and do not compost them.
• Avoid moving established plants unnecessarily. Hellebores may take time to recover from disturbance and often flower best when left in place.
• Divide mature clumps in early autumn only if required. Replant healthy sections immediately and water them thoroughly.
• With dappled shade, rich soil, reliable drainage and simple seasonal care, Helleborus ‘Angel Glow’ will provide elegant flowers, changing colour and attractive foliage for many years

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
