General Information

Hellebores are often called Christmas Roses or Lenten Roses, as they flower around Christmas through to spring. The Illumi Lime variety has been specially bred for its luminous green flowers and compact habit.

Planting

• When to plant: Best planted in autumn or spring, though container plants can be set out at any time of year if soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged.

• Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, spacing around 40cm apart.

• Preparation: Enrich the planting area with compost or leaf mould for healthy root development.

Watering & Feeding

• Water well during the first year to establish.

• Once settled, hellebores are fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from watering in prolonged dry spells.

• Apply a balanced fertiliser or top-dress with compost in early spring, just before flowering begins.

Maintenance

• Remove old or damaged leaves in late winter to show off new blooms.

• Deadheading is optional – flowers often fade attractively and persist for weeks.

• Mulch in spring with composted bark or leaf mould to keep soil rich and moist.

• Divide large clumps every 4–5 years in early spring if plants become overcrowded.

Protection

• Fully hardy; no special winter protection needed in the ground.

• In very exposed gardens, a fleece cover can protect flowers from heavy snow or icy winds.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
