General Information

Hellebores (Helleborus orientalis hybrids) are hardy perennials known for their long flowering season and attractive evergreen foliage.

• Flowering season: Late winter to spring (January–April).

• Height & spread: Around 30–45cm tall with a similar spread.

• Flowers: Cup-shaped, nodding blooms in a wide range of colours and patterns.

• Foliage: Evergreen, leathery leaves that provide year-round interest.

• Position: Prefers partial shade, making them perfect for woodland edges, under trees, or north-facing borders.

• Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained soil is best. Enrich with organic matter at planting time.

• Hardiness: Fully hardy in most climates, tolerating frosts and snow with ease.

• Wildlife value: Excellent early source of nectar for bees and pollinators.

These varieties are bred for strong garden performance, producing an abundance of blooms that last for many weeks.

Hellebores are easy to care for and improve year after year with very little effort.

Planting

• When to plant: Autumn or spring are best, but container plants can be planted at any time of year if soil conditions are suitable.

• Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as the pot, spacing 30–40cm apart.

• Preparation: Enrich the soil with compost or leaf mould before planting.

Watering & Feeding

• Water well during the first growing season to help roots establish.

• Once settled, hellebores are drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering in dry spells.

• Apply a balanced fertiliser or mulch with organic matter in late winter or early spring.

Maintenance

• Remove old or damaged leaves in late winter to make way for new growth and to showcase flowers more clearly.

• Deadheading is not essential, but removing faded blooms will encourage tidy growth.

• Divide or relocate plants in early spring if clumps become too crowded.

Protection

• Fully hardy, requiring no winter protection.

• Protect from waterlogged soil, which may cause root problems.

• Young plants may need guarding from slugs in spring.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
