Helleborus niger, known as the Christmas Rose, is one of the most cherished winter-flowering perennials, famed for its pure white blooms, which often appear around mid to late winter—sometimes as early as Christmas, hence its name. Native to the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe, it has long been a symbol of hope and renewal in the garden’s dormant season.

This species has a classic, understated beauty with cup-shaped flowers held above a rosette of leathery, dark green leaves. It is a reliable evergreen plant that provides structure and winter interest in shaded or woodland borders.

Light

• Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil

• Thrives in neutral to alkaline soils

• Will tolerate light clay if drainage is improved

• Add organic matter such as compost or leaf mould annually to maintain fertility

Watering

• Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells in spring and summer

• Avoid overwatering or planting in waterlogged soils—Hellebores dislike “wet feet”

Feeding

• Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser or organic plant food

• Apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure in spring to improve soil and retain moisture

Maintenance Tasks

• In late winter or early spring, remove any damaged or old leaves to make room for new growth and display the flowers more clearly

• Cut back flowering stems after bloom to conserve energy

• Helleborus niger dislikes disturbance—divide only when necessary, preferably in autumn

• Inspect regularly for signs of black spot or aphids; good air circulation helps prevent fungal issues

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
