Overview and Plant Profile

Helleborus ‘Penny’s Pink’ is a standout variety from the Rodney Davey Marbled Group (Helleborus x hybridus), renowned for its deep pink blooms and striking silver-marbled evergreen foliage. It brings bold winter colour and year-round visual interest to shade gardens, woodland borders, and containers. The plant’s name honours garden writer Penny Hobhouse, and it’s a favourite among designers for its long-lasting floral display and low-maintenance nature.

  • Botanical Name: Helleborus x hybridus ‘Penny’s Pink’

  • Common Name: Lenten Rose ‘Penny’s Pink’

  • Family: Ranunculaceae

  • Plant Type: Evergreen perennial

  • Height & Spread: 35–45 cm tall × 40–60 cm wide

  • Flowers: Dusky rose-pink maturing to deep pink and green tones; outward-facing

  • Foliage: Deep green with striking silver marbling; evergreen

  • Flowering Period: January to April (late winter into spring)

  • Habit: Clump-forming, tidy and compact

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy (H5–H7; tolerates -15°C to -20°C or lower)

Light, Soil & Positioning

Light Requirements

  • Thrives in partial to full shade

  • Prefers dappled sunlight under deciduous trees or shrubs

  • Avoid hot, direct afternoon sun—this can scorch leaves and shorten bloom life

Soil Conditions

  • Grows best in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil

  • Tolerates neutral to alkaline pH

  • Add organic matter like leaf mould or compost annually for best performance

  • Avoid poorly drained or overly wet sites

Watering, Feeding & Maintenance

Watering

  • Keep soil evenly moist, especially during establishment and flowering

  • Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, especially in shade

  • Mulch annually to help conserve soil moisture

Feeding

  • Feed in early spring using a balanced slow-release fertiliser

  • A light application of compost or well-rotted manure also supports vigour and flowering

Seasonal Maintenance

  • In late winter (January–early February), remove old or damaged foliage to reveal the new flower stems and reduce the risk of fungal disease

  • After flowering, cut back spent flower stalks to encourage tidy growth

  • Plants don’t require regular division but can be split in early autumn if needed

Garden Uses & Combinations

Helleborus ‘Penny’s Pink’ adds structure, colour, and texture to shaded spaces during winter and early spring, when other plants remain dormant. Its long-lasting blooms and ornamental foliage make it a multi-season performer.

Best Uses

  • Shaded or woodland borders

  • Winter containers near doorways or patios

  • Underplanting beneath shrubs or trees

  • Pollinator-friendly gardens

  • As part of mixed perennial beds

Companion Plants

  • Pair with Cyclamen coum, Galanthus (snowdrops), and Iris reticulata for early colour

  • Combine with Heuchera, Brunnera, or Epimedium for beautiful foliage contrast

  • Mix with Tiarella, Ferns, or Pulmonaria for a lush woodland feel

  • Works wonderfully in winter pots with Viola, carex, or Skimmia

Benefits and Selling Points

  • Unique marbled foliage adds visual interest year-round

  • Early-season blooms offer colour from January onward

  • Upright, outward-facing flowers for better visibility than traditional nodding hellebores

  • Long flowering period (up to 12 weeks or more)

  • Low maintenance and very hardy

  • Resistant to deer and rabbits

  • Provides nectar for early pollinators
