Planting Helleborus VIV ‘Willem’

Helleborus VIV ‘Willem’ is a compact, hardy perennial valued for its elegant winter and early spring flowers. Its blooms appear when relatively few other garden plants are flowering, while the leathery foliage provides useful texture for much of the year. It is well suited to woodland-style borders, shaded courtyards, winter containers and planting beneath deciduous shrubs.

• Choose a position in partial or dappled shade. A site receiving winter and spring light followed by summer shade beneath deciduous trees or shrubs is particularly suitable.
• Avoid deep, permanently dark shade, which may reduce flowering, and intense summer sun, which can scorch the foliage or dry the soil too quickly.
• Plant in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Hellebores tolerate clay, loam and chalk if the ground is improved and does not remain saturated.
• Prepare the planting area with well-rotted compost, leaf mould or another organic soil improver. Avoid fresh manure around the roots.
• Water the plant thoroughly before removing it from its pot. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than its existing height.
• Position the crown level with the soil surface. Planting too deeply can reduce flowering and may encourage crown rot.
• Backfill carefully, firm the soil gently and water generously. Apply a light organic mulch while keeping the crown and emerging shoots uncovered.
• Allow approximately 35–45 cm between plants, depending on their eventual spread and the density required.
• For containers, use a deep, frost-resistant pot with drainage holes and good-quality, peat-free compost mixed with grit.

Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care

Helleborus ‘Willem’ prefers soil that remains moderately moist but never waterlogged. Consistent care during establishment will help it develop into a long-lived clump.

• Water regularly during the first growing season, particularly in spring and summer. Apply water directly to the soil around the root zone.
• Established plants tolerate short dry periods, but prolonged drought can weaken flower-bud formation and cause foliage to collapse.
• Check container-grown plants frequently, even during winter. Dense foliage may divert rainfall away from the compost.
• Water containers thoroughly and allow excess moisture to drain. Empty saucers or decorative outer pots so the roots do not stand in water.
• Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring or after flowering. Avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage soft foliage.
• Top-dress established plants with well-rotted compost or leaf mould during autumn or spring to improve the soil and support future growth.
• Renew mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Leave clear space around the crown to reduce the risk of rot.
• Protect open flowers from severe frost or heavy snow where practical, although the established plant itself is generally hardy.
• Avoid moving mature hellebores unnecessarily. They often take time to re-establish after disturbance and may flower less in the following season.

Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

Hellebores need little pruning, but removing old foliage improves the flower display and helps limit the spread of leaf diseases.

• Cut away old, damaged or spotted leaves at ground level as flower buds begin to emerge, usually from late autumn to early spring.
• Use clean, sharp secateurs and avoid damaging new shoots hidden near the crown. Wear gloves because the sap can irritate sensitive skin.
• Remove faded flowers if seedlings are not wanted. Cut each flower stem near its base once the display has finished.
• Alternatively, retain selected seed heads for decorative interest or naturalised seedlings. Seed-grown plants may differ from the parent cultivar.
• Clear fallen leaves and flower debris from around the crown. Good hygiene helps reduce hellebore leaf spot and other fungal problems.
• Inspect young growth for aphids and check around the crown for slugs and snails. Control pests early to prevent damage to flowers and shoots.
• Black streaks, rings or distorted growth may indicate a serious viral problem. Remove and dispose of severely affected plants rather than composting them.
• Divide overcrowded clumps in early autumn if necessary, ensuring each section has healthy roots and buds. Replant promptly and water thoroughly.
• Move containers into light shade during hot summer weather and insulate exposed pots during prolonged freezing conditions.
• Do not consume any part of the plant. Hellebores are harmful if eaten and should be positioned carefully around children and pets.
• With partial shade, rich soil, steady moisture and annual foliage removal, Helleborus VIV ‘Willem’ will provide dependable winter flowers and attractive perennial structure for many years

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
