Hemerocallis ‘Snowy Eyes’ – Striking Contrast and Reliable Colour
The Hemerocallis ‘Snowy Eyes’ is a stunning daylily variety admired for its large, vibrant blooms with a unique colour contrast. Each flower features bright golden-yellow petals with a striking pure white central eye, creating a bold two-tone effect that stands out in summer borders. The ruffled petals, combined with the plant’s strong, upright stems, make this a dazzling feature plant that catches the eye from across the garden.
As with all daylilies, each flower lasts for just one day, but multiple buds on each stem ensure weeks of continuous blooms. ‘Snowy Eyes’ is hardy, low-maintenance, and long-lived, making it a fantastic choice for gardeners seeking bold summer colour with minimal care.

Planting
-
When to plant: Best in spring or autumn, though container-grown plants can be planted year-round.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant crowns just below soil level; space plants 45–60cm apart to allow clumps to expand.
-
Preparation: Enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
-
Containers: Suitable for large pots – use a moisture-retentive compost with added grit for drainage.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water regularly during the first year to establish strong roots.
-
Once established, relatively drought-tolerant but will flower better with consistent watering in dry spells.
-
Apply a general fertiliser in spring and a high-potash feed in midsummer to encourage flowering.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Deadhead daily to keep the display looking fresh and prolong the flowering season.
-
Cut back flowering stems to the base once blooming is finished.
-
Trim back old foliage in late autumn; fresh growth appears the following spring.
-
Divide clumps every 4–5 years in spring or autumn to rejuvenate and prevent overcrowding.
Protection
-
Fully hardy and winter-tough with no special care needed.
-
Pest-free in most cases, though slugs may nibble new shoots in spring.
-
Disease-resistant and very reliable once established.
