Below is a complete care guide to help gardeners get the best from this beautiful variety.
Planting & Position
For Heuchera ‘Boysenberry’ to thrive, choosing the right location and planting method is essential.
-
Light requirements:
-
Prefers partial shade; morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal.
-
Can tolerate full sun in cooler climates, but too much direct sun may scorch leaves.
-
-
Soil:
-
Best in fertile, moist, but well-draining soil.
-
Slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0–7.0) is ideal.
-
Heavy clay or waterlogged soils should be improved with organic matter or grit.
-
-
Planting time:
-
Spring or early autumn is best, allowing roots to establish before heat or frost.
-
-
Spacing:
-
Plant 30–40 cm apart to allow for clump growth.
-
-
Companion plants:
-
Looks stunning when paired with hostas, ferns, grasses, or other shade-loving perennials.
-
Care & Maintenance
Once established, Heuchera ‘Boysenberry’ is relatively low-maintenance, though a little seasonal attention helps keep it looking its best.
-
Watering:
-
Keep soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells.
-
Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring.
-
A mulch of compost or leaf mould around the crown will feed soil and help retain moisture.
-
-
Pruning & grooming:
-
Remove faded flower stems after blooming to tidy the plant.
-
Trim away damaged or tatty leaves in spring to encourage fresh growth.
-
-
Mulching:
-
A light mulch in spring helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
-
-
Pests & diseases:
-
Generally trouble-free, but watch for vine weevils, which nibble leaves and roots.
-
Powdery mildew may occur in overly humid or crowded conditions.
-
-
Winter care:
-
Evergreen in mild winters, though leaves may look tired.
-
Protect crowns with mulch in colder regions to prevent frost heave.
-
