Heuchera 'Marmalade' is a striking, evergreen perennial known for its vivid foliage colours and neat mounding habit. This variety is part of the popular Coral Bells group, grown primarily for its ornamental leaves which offer year-round interest.

‘Marmalade’ stands out with its rich, apricot-orange to amber tones, sometimes flushed with rose or copper, especially in cooler seasons. The slightly ruffled foliage creates a lush, tidy clump that adds warm colour and texture to beds, borders, containers, or shaded garden areas.

• Grows to approx. 25–30 cm tall, with flower spikes up to 45 cm

• Forms a dense mound with lobed, frilled foliage

• Tiny, bell-shaped white-pink flowers appear in late spring to early summer

• Evergreen in mild climates, semi-evergreen elsewhere

• Loved for its long seasonal interest and ability to thrive in tricky shady spots

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Heuchera 'Marmalade' is easy to care for, thriving in part-shade with good soil drainage. It performs well in both garden beds and containers.

• Light Requirements:

  • Prefers partial shade, especially in hot or dry regions

  • Tolerates full sun in cooler climates with consistent moisture

  • Too much shade can reduce leaf colour vibrancy

• Soil Preferences:

  • Grows best in well-drained, fertile soil

  • Suitable for neutral to slightly acidic soil

  • Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained sites

• Watering:

  • Keep soil evenly moist, especially in the first year

  • Once established, it's relatively drought-tolerant

  • Water container-grown plants more frequently

• Feeding:

  • Apply a light general-purpose fertiliser in spring

  • Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to soft growth

• Pruning and Grooming:

  • Remove dead or tatty leaves throughout the year to maintain neatness

  • Cut back flower spikes after blooming to encourage compact growth

  • Tidy up any winter-damaged foliage in early spring

Heuchera 'Marmalade' is a versatile and colourful addition to shady or semi-shady garden designs, and works beautifully in containers, edges, and mixed borders.

  • Mixed foliage beds and colour-themed planting schemes

  • Also works well in woodland gardens or cottage-style beds

• Companion Plants:

  • Pairs well with:

    • Hosta (contrasting bold foliage)

    • Ferns and Brunnera (for layered texture)

    • Tiarella, Pulmonaria, and Carex for complementary foliage and form

    • Great with other Heucheras or Heucherellas for multicolour displays

• Hardiness:

  • Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland (RHS H5, approx. –10°C to –15°C)

  • Evergreen in most regions but may defoliate slightly in harsh winters

• Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally trouble-free

  • Watch for vine weevil in pots—inspect roots if plants decline

  • Ensure good drainage to avoid root rot

• Propagation:

  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to rejuvenate and multiply

  • Can be grown from basal cuttings but division is quicker

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
