Planting Hippophae rhamnoides 'Friesdorfer Orange'
Choosing the Right Location
- Sunlight: Sea Buckthorn thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. For the best fruit production and foliage color, plant it in a location that receives ample sunlight.
- Soil Requirements: Prefers well-drained soil, ideally sandy or loamy. Ensure that the soil has good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Planting Instructions
- Prepare the Site: Clear the planting area of weeds and debris. Dig a hole that is twice the width of the root ball and of equal depth.
- Position the Plant: Place the plant in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill and Water: Fill the hole with soil, firming gently to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly to help the plant settle in.
- Spacing: Space plants 1.5 to 2.5 meters (5 to 8 feet) apart to accommodate their mature spread and to allow for adequate air circulation.
Maintenance Tips for Hippophae rhamnoides 'Friesdorfer Orange'
Regular Care
- Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Sea Buckthorn is drought-tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering during extended dry periods.
- Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of fruit production.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged wood. Light pruning helps to promote better air circulation and fruit production.
Seasonal Care
- Spring: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Begin regular watering and fertilizing as new growth starts.
- Summer: Ensure consistent watering during dry spells. Monitor for pests and diseases, and address any issues promptly.
- Autumn: Prepare the plant for winter by reducing watering and removing fallen leaves and debris from around the base.
- Winter: Protect young plants from severe frost by adding a layer of mulch or covering them with fleece during exceptionally cold weather.
