Planting Site and Soil Preparation

  • Light Preferences: Hosta 'Coast to Coast'® grows best in partial to full shade. Some morning sun is acceptable and may enhance its golden color, but protect it from harsh afternoon sun to avoid leaf burn.

  • Ideal Soil Conditions: Prefers fertile, organically rich, well-drained soil. Amending the planting area with compost or aged manure helps retain moisture and support strong growth.

  • Moisture Requirements: Requires consistently moist soil, particularly during warm weather. Although somewhat tolerant of brief dry periods once established, regular watering yields the best foliage quality.

  • Planting Location: Best suited to shaded garden beds, woodland gardens, and under the canopy of trees. Avoid exposed areas with drying winds or intense sun.

  • Timing: Plant in early spring or early autumn to allow the root system to establish before high heat or freezing conditions.

  • Spacing: Allow 3 to 4 feet of spacing between plants. This hosta develops into a large clump and needs room to reach full size while maintaining air flow around its foliage.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially during dry periods. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are preferable to keep foliage dry and reduce fungal risk.

  • Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as new growth emerges. An organic mulch can also serve as a slow-feeding supplement over the growing season.

  • Mulching: Apply 2–3 inches of mulch to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperature. Avoid direct contact between mulch and the plant crown.

  • Deadheading and Tidying: Trim flower scapes after blooming to tidy the plant. Remove any damaged or yellowing leaves during the season to maintain a healthy, clean appearance.

  • Division: Divide mature clumps every 4 to 5 years if necessary. The best time to divide is early spring or after flowering in late summer.

  • Pests and Wildlife: Susceptible to slugs and snails, which can damage the large leaves. Use traps, copper barriers, or organic pellets. Deer and rabbits may graze on hostas, so use repellents or fencing as needed.

  • Disease Prevention: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Watch for signs of crown rot or fungal leaf spots, and remove any affected foliage promptly.

Appearance and Seasonal Features

  • Foliage and Form: This variety is known for its upright, vase-shaped habit and large, puckered golden-yellow leaves. The foliage has a thick, leathery texture that resists slug damage better than many hostas.

  • Size: Grows to approximately 30 inches tall and 36 to 48 inches wide, forming a stately, commanding presence in shade gardens.

  • Flowers: Produces tall scapes of pale lavender to nearly white bell-shaped flowers in midsummer. Though not the primary attraction, the blooms add light seasonal interest and attract pollinators.

  • Color Evolution: The foliage emerges chartreuse in spring and intensifies to a brighter gold as the season progresses, particularly in brighter shade conditions.

  • Design Uses: Ideal as a focal point in shaded beds or paired with blue, green, or variegated hostas for a contrasting effect. Pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other woodland perennials.

  • Winter Preparation: After the first frost, cut back foliage and apply a winter mulch layer to protect the crown. The plant will re-emerge vigorously in spring.

  • Hardiness: Performs well in USDA Zones 3–9, making it suitable for a wide range of climates.
