Planting Requirements and Ideal Conditions

• Light Preferences: Hosta 'Devon Green' prefers partial to full shade. It can tolerate morning sun, which enhances its glossy leaf finish, but too much direct afternoon sunlight may scorch the foliage.

• Soil Type: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Amend clay or sandy soils with compost to improve structure and moisture retention.

• Moisture Needs: Requires consistent moisture, especially during the warmer months. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as this can lead to stress and reduced foliage quality.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn when soil temperatures are moderate. Early planting allows roots to establish before temperature extremes.

• Planting Site: Ideal for shaded beds, woodland gardens, or along the north side of buildings. Also suitable for containers in shady patios or courtyards.

• Spacing: Space plants about 2 to 3 feet apart to allow them to form full, attractive clumps while maintaining good air circulation.

Seasonal Maintenance and Care

• Watering: Water deeply at the base, especially during dry spells. Keeping the soil evenly moist is key to maintaining the lush, glossy appearance of the leaves.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this may produce overly soft growth that is more vulnerable to slugs.

• Mulching: Add a 2–3 inch layer of organic mulch to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the soil cool. Keep mulch slightly away from the crown to prevent rot.

• Pruning: Remove any yellowing, damaged, or slug-eaten leaves during the growing season. In autumn, cut the plant down to the ground after the first frost to reduce pest and disease carryover.

• Division: Divide every 3–5 years if the plant becomes overcrowded or to rejuvenate growth. This is best done in early spring or late summer.

• Pest Control: Monitor for slugs and snails, which are the main pests of hostas. Use traps, copper tape, or organic pellets. Deer and rabbits may also browse on hostas—apply repellents if needed.

• Disease Management: Good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering will reduce the risk of foliar diseases and crown rot. Remove and destroy any infected leaves.

Ornamental Features and Garden Design

• Foliage: Hosta 'Devon Green' features thick, glossy, dark green leaves with prominent veining and a subtle sheen. The texture is slightly puckered, giving the plant a bold yet elegant appearance.

• Size and Growth: Forms a compact mound approximately 18 inches tall and up to 30 inches wide. Its tidy growth habit makes it ideal for the front of borders or edging paths.

• Flowering: Produces pale lavender, bell-shaped flowers in mid to late summer on 24-inch scapes. While the flowers are modest, they attract hummingbirds and add seasonal interest.

• Seasonal Appeal: From early spring through late autumn, the lush foliage offers visual appeal. The glossy leaves remain neat and weather-resistant throughout the season.

• Design Uses: Excellent for shade borders, underplanting shrubs, or creating texture contrast with ferns, brunnera, heuchera, or other hostas. Works well in formal gardens and mixed plantings alike.

• Container Friendly: Can be grown in pots with sufficient depth and moisture. Choose a shaded patio or courtyard spot and ensure regular watering.

• Hardiness: Suitable for USDA Zones 3–9. In colder zones, apply a protective mulch in winter to insulate the crown.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
