Hosta 'Gold Standard' – Planting & Care Guide

About Hosta 'Gold Standard'

Hosta 'Gold Standard', commonly known as Plantain Lily 'Gold Standard', is a classic, award-winning perennial admired for its striking golden-yellow foliage with rich dark green margins. As the season progresses, the heart of each leaf brightens to a vibrant golden-yellow, creating a stunning contrast that lights up shaded areas of the garden.

During mid to late summer, elegant stems rise above the foliage carrying clusters of soft lavender, bell-shaped flowers that attract bees and other pollinating insects. Growing to approximately 50–60cm tall, with flower spikes reaching 70–80cm, and spreading 80–100cm, 'Gold Standard' forms a broad, graceful clump that becomes increasingly impressive with age. It is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, containers and around ponds.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in partial shade or full shade.
  • Morning sun helps develop the brightest golden leaf colour.
  • Protect from hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • Improve poor soils by incorporating compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the crown.
  • Space plants approximately 80–100cm apart to allow for mature growth.

Care & Maintenance

Hosta 'Gold Standard' is a dependable perennial that requires minimal care.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during warm weather.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
  • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Refresh mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil fertility.
  • Remove weeds regularly from around the base.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently during dry periods.
  • Divide mature clumps every 4–5 years to maintain vigour.
  • Protect emerging shoots from late spring frosts if necessary.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

  • Remove faded flower stems after flowering.
  • Cut away damaged or yellowing leaves throughout the growing season.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally in autumn.
  • Remove dead foliage in late autumn or early spring.
  • Clean around the crown before new growth begins to improve plant health.
