Planting Location and Soil Preparation

• Light Requirements: Shadowland® ‘Diamond Lake’ performs best in partial to full shade. Morning sun can enhance the leaf colour and texture, but avoid hot afternoon sun which may cause leaf burn.

• Soil Conditions: Thrives in rich, well-drained soil with high organic content. Incorporate compost or aged manure to boost fertility and improve soil structure.

• Moisture Needs: Requires consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Avoid letting the soil dry out for extended periods, as this can lead to stress and reduced foliage performance.

• Site Selection: Ideal for shaded garden beds, woodland areas, and along the north or east sides of buildings. Also works beautifully in shaded containers or as a feature plant in hosta borders.

• Planting Time: Best planted in early spring or early autumn when the soil is warm and moist. These conditions help establish a strong root system before peak summer or winter temperatures.

• Spacing: Plant 30 to 36 inches apart to accommodate mature width. Proper spacing ensures good airflow and minimizes fungal issues.

Maintenance, Feeding, and Seasonal Care

• Watering: Water deeply and regularly to maintain even soil moisture. Use a soaker hose or water at the base to keep foliage dry and reduce risk of fungal disease.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as new growth emerges. Organic options like compost or seaweed-based feeds also support healthy foliage development.

• Mulching: Use 2–3 inches of mulch to conserve soil moisture, control weeds, and regulate temperature. Keep mulch away from the crown of the plant to prevent rot.

• Deadheading and Pruning: Remove flower stalks after bloom to tidy the plant and encourage energy back into foliage. Trim away yellow or damaged leaves during the growing season.

• Division: Can be divided every 4–5 years if clumps become too large or lose vigour. Divide in early spring or late summer for best results.

• Pest Management: Slugs and snails are the primary pests—use traps, barriers, or organic pellets to manage them. Also monitor for deer and rabbits, which may feed on hosta leaves.

• Disease Prevention: Promote air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and space plants properly to prevent crown rot and foliar disease. Sanitize tools to avoid spreading pathogens between plants.

Visual Appeal and Garden Use

• Foliage: Shadowland® ‘Diamond Lake’ is prized for its large, heart-shaped, heavily textured leaves in a striking blue hue. The deeply puckered surface gives it a quilted appearance, adding visual depth to shaded spaces.

• Plant Size: Reaches about 17–20 inches tall and spreads up to 36–42 inches wide, forming a substantial clump that makes a strong visual impact.

• Flowers: Produces soft lavender bell-shaped flowers on 24–30 inch scapes in midsummer. Flowers attract hummingbirds and pollinators, adding seasonal interest.

• Color Retention: The thick, blue foliage holds its colour well throughout the season, especially when protected from too much direct sunlight.

• Design Versatility: Perfect as a specimen plant or massed in shade gardens. Pairs well with other hostas, ferns, brunnera, and heuchera. Also striking when contrasted with chartreuse or variegated plants.

• Container Use: Suitable for large containers with good drainage. Make sure pots are kept moist and shaded, and protect roots from winter freezing if kept outdoors.

• Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 3–9. In colder areas, apply mulch in late autumn to insulate the crown during winter dormancy.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
