Hosta sieboldiana 'Frances Williams', commonly known as Plantain Lily 'Frances Williams', is one of the largest and most impressive Hosta varieties, prized for its spectacular blue-green leaves with broad golden-yellow margins. As the season progresses, the leaf edges soften to creamy yellow, creating a beautiful contrast that brightens shaded areas of the garden.

During mid to late summer, tall flower stems rise above the foliage carrying elegant pale lavender to almost white, bell-shaped flowers that attract bees and other pollinating insects. Growing to approximately 60–75cm tall, with flower stems reaching 90–100cm, and spreading 1–1.2 metres, 'Frances Williams' forms a magnificent architectural clump that becomes more striking each year. It is an excellent feature plant for woodland gardens, large borders, pond edges and shaded courtyards.

Planting Guide

• Plant in partial shade or full shade.
• Morning sun is beneficial, but avoid strong afternoon sun which can scorch the foliage.
• Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
• Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
• Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
• Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
• Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
• Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
• Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the crown.
• Space plants approximately 1–1.2 metres apart to allow room for their impressive mature size.

Care & Maintenance

Hosta 'Frances Williams' is a long-lived perennial that requires very little maintenance once established.

• Water regularly during the first growing season.
• Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during warm weather.
• Avoid allowing the soil to become waterlogged.
• Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
• Refresh mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.
• Remove weeds regularly from around the base.
• Water container-grown plants more frequently during dry spells.
• Divide mature clumps every 5–6 years if required.
• Protect emerging shoots from late spring frosts where necessary.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

• Remove faded flower stems once flowering has finished.

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
