Introduction to Hydrangea anomala
Hydrangea anomala is a beautiful, deciduous climbing plant, most commonly known as the Climbing Hydrangea. Native to the woodlands of the Himalayas and eastern Asia, this species is prized for its ability to cover walls, fences, and large tree trunks with stunning blooms and lush green foliage. Its most well-known variety, Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris, is a vigorous climber that attaches itself to surfaces using aerial roots.
This hydrangea is ideal for shaded or partially shaded spots and provides a long season of interest—from its attractive green foliage in spring and summer, to clusters of fragrant, lace-cap white flowers in early summer, and golden yellow autumn colour.
Planting and Positioning Tips
When planting Hydrangea anomala, careful consideration of its position and support structure is key to success.

Prefers moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil.

Neutral to slightly acidic soil is ideal.

-
-
Ideal Locations:
-
Excellent for north or east-facing walls, woodland gardens, or as a feature on pergolas and old trees.
-
Care and Maintenance Guidelines
While Hydrangea anomala is relatively low-maintenance, a few seasonal tasks will help ensure vigorous growth and generous flowering.
-
Watering:
-
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells in summer.
-
Mulch around the base with organic matter in spring to retain moisture.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy foliage and flowers.
-
Avoid over-fertilising, which can encourage leaf growth at the expense of blooms.
-
-
Pruning:
-
Requires minimal pruning—just remove dead, damaged or crossing stems after flowering.
-
Can be trained and lightly shaped in late winter or early spring.
-
Avoid hard pruning, which may reduce flowering the following season.
-
-
Climbing Support:
-
Will cling to rough surfaces like brick or tree bark.
-
On smoother surfaces like fences or trellises, gently tie young shoots until they self-attach.
-
-
Pests and Diseases:
-
Generally pest and disease-free.
-
Watch for aphids, slugs, or powdery mildew in humid conditions—manage with regular inspections and good airflow.
-
-
Winter Care:
-
Hardy to around -15°C or lower, making it suitable for most parts of the UK and Ireland.
-
Young plants may benefit from protection in exposed areas during their first winter.
