Planting Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bolero’ (French Hydrangea)
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bolero’ is a compact, deciduous shrub known for its large, rounded flower heads and rich colouring, typically in shades of pink, red, or purple depending on soil conditions. It is ideal for adding bold summer colour to borders, containers, and patio displays.
Choosing the right position
- Prefers partial shade or a position with morning sun and afternoon shade
- Avoid intense midday sun, which can scorch leaves and flowers
- Suitable for sheltered borders, patios, or courtyard gardens
- Protect from strong winds, which can damage large blooms
- Ideal for container planting due to its compact habit
Soil requirements
- Thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile soil
- Prefers neutral to acidic conditions for best colour development
- Flower colour may vary depending on soil pH
- Avoid very dry or waterlogged soils
- Improve soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting
How to plant in the ground
- Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth
- Soak the root ball thoroughly before planting
- Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface
- Backfill with enriched soil and firm gently
- Water well after planting
- Apply a mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature
Planting in containers
- Use a large pot with good drainage holes
- Fill with high-quality, moisture-retentive compost
- Ensure the plant is positioned at the correct depth
- Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain
- Place in a sheltered location with partial shade
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
Hydrangea ‘Bolero’ is relatively easy to maintain and will provide reliable, vibrant blooms with consistent care.
Watering
- Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season
- Water deeply during dry periods
- Container-grown plants require frequent watering
- Avoid letting the soil dry out completely
- Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging
Feeding
- Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth
- Use a hydrangea-specific or general-purpose feed
- A second feed in early summer can encourage better flowering
- Container plants benefit from regular liquid feeding
- Avoid excessive feeding, which can lead to leafy growth with fewer flowers
Pruning and deadheading
- Remove spent flower heads to encourage continued blooming
- Prune lightly in spring, removing dead or weak stems
- Avoid heavy pruning, as flowers form on old wood
- Leave some old stems intact to ensure flowering the following year
- Cut back only to healthy buds where necessary
Mulching
- Apply a generous mulch in spring
- Helps retain moisture and suppress weeds
- Improves soil structure over time
- Keep mulch clear of the base of the plant
Seasonal Care and Common Issues
With proper care, Hydrangea ‘Bolero’ will provide long-lasting colour and structure throughout the summer months.
Seasonal interest
- Produces large, vibrant flower heads from early to late summer
- Flower colour may change depending on soil conditions
- Lush green foliage provides a full, attractive backdrop
- Dried flower heads can be left for autumn and winter interest
Winter care
- Moderately hardy but may need protection in colder areas
- Protect from frost, especially in exposed locations
- Leave old flower heads on over winter to protect buds
- Mulch in autumn to insulate roots
- Container plants can be moved to a sheltered position during severe weather
Common problems
- Wilting leaves are often caused by lack of water
- Poor flowering may result from incorrect pruning or frost damage to buds
- Leaf scorch can occur in hot, dry, or exposed conditions
- Colour may be affected by unsuitable soil pH
- Occasionally affected by aphids or mildew in humid conditions
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bolero’ is a beautiful and compact shrub that brings bold, seasonal colour to the garden. Its versatility makes it suitable for both borders and containers, while its striking blooms create a strong visual impact. With consistent moisture, careful pruning, and the right position, it will thrive and provide a reliable and eye-catching display year after year.
