Hydrangea (Various Varieties) 7.5 Litre – Planting & Care Guide

About Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are among the most popular flowering shrubs, loved for their spectacular blooms, lush foliage and long flowering season. Available in a wide range of varieties, they produce flowers in shades of white, pink, blue, purple, red and lime green, bringing months of colour to borders, patios and woodland gardens.

Whether you choose Hydrangea macrophylla, paniculata, arborescens, serrata or climbing hydrangeas, these hardy shrubs are easy to grow and thrive in the Irish climate. Many varieties flower from early summer until autumn, while their fading blooms and attractive foliage provide additional seasonal interest.

Growing between 1–3 metres tall, depending on the variety, hydrangeas are ideal as feature plants, informal hedging, mixed borders or patio container specimens.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun, partial shade or light dappled shade, depending on the variety.
  • Most hydrangeas perform best with morning sun and afternoon shade.
  • Choose fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • Improve heavy or poor soils with plenty of compost or well-rotted organic matter.
  • Dig a planting hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly deeper.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill firmly and water thoroughly after planting.
  • Apply a 5–8cm layer of mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the stem.
  • Space plants according to the mature size, typically 1–2 metres apart.

Care & Maintenance

Hydrangeas are low-maintenance shrubs that reward gardeners with impressive flowers each year.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Continue watering during prolonged dry periods, especially in summer.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
  • Feed in early spring using a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Apply a hydrangea or ericaceous fertiliser if growing blue-flowering varieties in acidic soil.
  • Refresh mulch each spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Remove weeds from around the base to reduce competition for nutrients.
  • Avoid planting where the soil dries out quickly.
  • Protect young plants from severe late frosts if necessary.

Pruning

Pruning depends on the type of hydrangea.

  • Remove dead, damaged or weak stems in late winter or early spring.
  • Hydrangea macrophylla and serrata flower on old wood, so only remove faded flower heads and lightly shape after flowering.
  • Hydrangea paniculata and arborescens flower on new growth and can be cut back hard in late winter or early spring.
  • Remove any crossing branches to improve airflow.
  • Deadhead spent blooms if preferred, although dried flowers provide attractive winter interest.

Seasonal Interest

  • Fresh green foliage emerges in spring.
  • Large flower buds develop in early summer.
  • Spectacular blooms provide colour from summer into autumn.
  • Many flower colours soften and mature as the season progresses.
  • Autumn foliage on some varieties develops attractive bronze, burgundy or red tones.
  • Dried flower heads remain decorative throughout winter before new growth appears in spring.

Common Problems

Hydrangeas are generally easy to grow when planted in suitable conditions.

  • Wilting during hot weather usually indicates the need for watering.
  • Yellow leaves may result from poor drainage or nutrient deficiencies.
  • Brown leaf edges can occur if plants dry out.
  • Powdery mildew may occasionally appear during humid weather but is rarely serious.
  • Slugs and snails may feed on young shoots in spring.
  • Flower colour in some varieties, particularly Hydrangea macrophylla, can vary depending on soil pH, with acidic soils encouraging blue flowers and alkaline soils producing pink blooms.

With their outstanding floral displays, reliable performance and long season of interest, Hydrangeas are an excellent choice for gardens of all sizes. Their beautiful blooms, easy-care nature and versatility make them one of the finest flowering shrubs for borders, containers and landscape planting throughout Ireland.
