Overview and Features

The Hydrangea macrophylla 'Magical'® series is a premium selection of mophead hydrangeas prized for their remarkable colour-changing flowers, compact growth, and exceptional garden or patio performance. The 'Magical Mix' includes various cultivars like Magical Amethyst, Magical Coral, Magical Revolution, and Magical Ruby Red, each known for multi-tonal blooms that evolve through the season—shifting shades of pink, blue, green, purple, or red depending on soil pH and maturity.

These cultivars are ideal for containers, small gardens, or as standout features in mixed borders. They are robust, floriferous, and long-blooming, with flower heads that last from early summer into autumn, and remain attractive even as they age.

Light and Soil Requirements

Hydrangea 'Magical'® cultivars perform best when grown in part shade, although they can tolerate full sun with adequate moisture. Soil composition and pH directly influence flower colour.

Light Needs

• Partial shade is ideal—morning sun with afternoon shade

• Full sun acceptable if soil is consistently moist

• Too much shade may reduce flowering

Soil Preferences

• Grows well in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils

• pH-sensitive:

  • Acidic soil (pH < 6) = blue to violet blooms

  • Alkaline soil (pH > 7) = pink to red blooms

• Use aluminium sulfate to enhance blue tones or lime to encourage pinks

• Improve soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting

Watering, Feeding, and General Care

Watering

• Requires consistent moisture, especially in containers or dry spells

• Water deeply, 2–3 times per week in hot weather

• Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds

Feeding

• Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser

• A second feed in mid-summer supports prolonged flowering

• Use colour-enhancing hydrangea fertilisers if managing bloom tone is important

Pruning

• Prune after flowering, in late summer or early autumn

• Remove only dead, weak, or damaged wood

• Avoid hard pruning—flowers form on old wood (previous year’s stems)

• Deadheading spent blooms in autumn is optional but improves tidiness

Winter and Container Care

• Fully hardy in the ground but protect potted plants from frost

• For containers:

  • Use large pots with good drainage

  • Insulate roots with straw or fleece in colder areas

  • Reduce watering in winter but do not let soil dry out completely

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
