Hydrangea macrophylla 'Music Collection'® Mix – Planting & Care Guide
About Hydrangea macrophylla 'Music Collection'® Mix
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Music Collection'® Mix is a stunning range of compact mophead hydrangeas, bred for their vibrant flower colours, strong growth and long flowering season. Available in a beautiful mix of shades including pink, blue, purple, white and bi-colour blooms, these elegant shrubs provide months of colour from early summer through to autumn.
With a naturally rounded, bushy habit, the plants typically grow to 80–120cm tall with a similar spread, making them perfect for borders, patio containers, courtyard gardens and feature planting. Their large flower heads contrast beautifully with glossy dark green foliage, creating an eye-catching display throughout the growing season. Flower colour in some varieties may vary depending on soil pH, with acidic soils encouraging blue blooms and alkaline soils producing pink flowers.
Planting Guide
- Plant in partial shade or full sun, with afternoon shade preferred in warmer locations.
- Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds.
- Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
- Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently loosen the roots.
- Position the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the main stems.
- Space plants approximately 1–1.2 metres apart to allow for mature growth.
Care & Maintenance
Hydrangea 'Music Collection'® Mix is easy to grow and produces an impressive display with regular care.
- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during hot, dry weather.
- Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
- Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
- Apply a second light feed in early summer to support healthy growth and abundant flowers.
- Refresh mulch each spring to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.
- Remove weeds regularly from around the base.
- Water container-grown plants more frequently, especially during warm weather.
- Protect young plants from severe late frosts during their first winter if required.
Pruning
Hydrangea macrophylla varieties flower on old wood, so pruning should be kept to a minimum.
- Remove faded flower heads in late winter or early spring.
- Cut back only to the first pair of healthy buds below the old flower.
- Remove any dead, damaged or weak stems.
- Lightly shape the plant after flowering if necessary.
- Avoid hard pruning, as this will remove next season's flower buds.
- Remove one or two of the oldest stems every few years to encourage fresh growth.
