Hydrangea macrophylla 'Surfing Safari'® Mix is a vibrant collection of compact mophead hydrangeas that boast intense, saturated colours and repeat-flowering performance. Bred for strong branching and bold flower heads, the ‘Surfing Safari’® series stands out for its reliability, neat habit, and colour versatility.

Each plant in the mix may feature shades of blue, pink, purple, red, or bi-tones, often changing subtly depending on soil pH. The dense, rounded blooms sit atop dark green foliage, making this variety a standout in borders, containers, or as a focal point in small gardens.

• Height and spread: 60–90 cm tall × 60–90 cm wide

Planting and Soil Conditions

Hydrangea ‘Surfing Safari’® is easy to grow and adaptable, but proper planting ensures vigorous growth and long-lasting flowers.

• Light Requirements:

  • Prefers partial shade, especially in hotter regions

  • Tolerates full sun in cooler climates, with sufficient moisture

  • Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal

• Soil Preferences:

  • Grows best in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil

  • Colour varies with pH:

    • Acidic soil (pH < 6): blue to purple flowers

    • Neutral to alkaline soil (pH > 6.5): pink to red flowers

• Planting Tips:

  • Plant in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild

  • Dig in organic matter (compost or leaf mould) before planting

  • Space 60–80 cm apart for good airflow in borders

Watering, Feeding, and Maintenance

Regular care will keep your 'Surfing Safari'® hydrangeas blooming well into late summer.

• Watering:

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged

  • Water deeply during dry spells—especially important in pots

  • Avoid watering over the flowers to reduce rot and mildew

• Feeding:

  • Feed with a slow-release hydrangea fertiliser in early spring

  • For blue flowers, apply aluminium sulphate or ericaceous feed

  • For pink flowers, use lime to raise soil pH if needed

• Mulching:

  • Mulch in spring with compost, bark, or leaf mould

  • Helps conserve moisture and improve soil quality

• Pruning:

  • Lightly prune after flowering, removing spent blooms and weak stems

  • Avoid cutting back hard in spring—buds form on old wood

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage reblooming in summer

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
