Description and General Information

• Botanical Name: Hydrangea paniculata ‘Garden Lights Collection’

• Common Name: Garden Lights Hydrangea (various colours in the collection)

• Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub

• Growth Habit: Upright, bushy form, typically reaching 1–1.5 metres in height and spread, depending on the variety within the collection.

• Foliage: Mid-green, lance-shaped leaves that form a lush backdrop to the blooms.

• Flowers: Large conical clusters (panicles) of flowers in stunning seasonal shades—ranging from creamy white to blush pink, deep rose, lime green, or even ruby tones as they age.

• Flowering Period: Abundant blooms from July to September, often lasting into early autumn.

• Seasonal Interest: Eye-catching flower colour changes through the season, attractive green foliage in spring and summer, and interesting seed heads in autumn and winter.

• Garden Uses: Excellent for mixed borders, feature planting, hedging, large containers, and cut flowers (fresh or dried).

• Wildlife Benefits: A valuable nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

• Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; more sun encourages stronger flowering, but some shade is beneficial in hotter climates.

• Soil Preferences: Moist, fertile, humus-rich soil with good drainage.

• pH Range: Neutral to slightly acidic (pH 5.5–7.0). Unlike Hydrangea macrophylla, flower colour in H. paniculata is not affected by soil pH.

• Moisture Needs: Prefers consistent moisture—avoid drought, especially during peak flowering.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or autumn when the soil is workable and temperatures are moderate.

• Spacing: Allow 1–1.5 metres between plants for mature spread.

• Shelter Needs: Plant in a sheltered position away from strong winds to protect large blooms from damage.

• Companion Planting: Pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, roses, ferns, hostas, and late-summer perennials like rudbeckia and echinacea.

• Container Growing: Suitable for large pots—use a loam-based compost with added organic matter, and water regularly.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water deeply once or twice weekly in dry weather.

  • Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering in summer.

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage strong growth and prolific blooms.

  • Supplement with a liquid feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.

• Pruning:

  • Prune in late winter or early spring by cutting back stems to a strong pair of buds about one-third from the base.

  • This encourages vigorous new growth and larger flower heads.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm mulch layer of compost or well-rotted manure in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil quality.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally free from serious pests and diseases; may occasionally be affected by aphids or mildew—treat promptly if needed.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy; mulch around the base in colder regions to protect roots and help retain soil moisture.

• Weed Control: Keep the root zone weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water.

• Longevity: With proper care, plants in the Garden Lights Collection will flower reliably for many years, maturing into a striking feature in any garden.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
