About Hydrangea 'Groundbreaker® Greeny™'

Hydrangea paniculata 'Groundbreaker® Greeny™' is an innovative, very low-growing panicle hydrangea bred to produce the impressive flowering performance of a traditional Hydrangea paniculata on a compact, spreading plant.

Its large flower panicles open in fresh lime-green to creamy-green tones, creating a long-lasting display from summer into autumn. Its unusually low habit makes it particularly useful at the front of borders, as flowering ground cover and in patio containers.

Growing to approximately 30–50cm tall with a spread of around 60–80cm, 'Groundbreaker® Greeny™' is an excellent choice where a conventional panicle hydrangea would become too large.

Planting Guide

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.
• In warmer, sheltered gardens, some afternoon shade can help prevent excessive drying.
• Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.
• Suitable for loam, clay and sandy soils when improved with organic matter.
• Dig a planting hole approximately twice the width of the root ball.
• Position the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
• Backfill with compost-enriched soil and firm gently.
• Water thoroughly after planting.
• Apply a generous organic mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
• Allow approximately 60–80cm between plants when creating low mass planting.

Care & Maintenance

Groundbreaker® Greeny™ is relatively easy to maintain but performs best when it receives consistent moisture.

• Water regularly during the first growing season.
• Keep well watered during prolonged warm or dry weather.
• Do not allow container-grown plants to dry out completely.
• Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
• Apply compost or well-rotted organic matter around the plant each spring.
• Maintain a layer of mulch to keep the root system cool and moist.
• Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Pruning

Like other Hydrangea paniculata, Groundbreaker® Greeny™ flowers on the current year's growth and can therefore be pruned in spring.

• Prune in February or March, before strong new growth begins.
• Remove dead, damaged or weak stems.
• Cut back the previous year's growth to encourage fresh flowering shoots.
• Because this is naturally a very compact variety, avoid unnecessarily severe pruning.
• Remove faded flower heads in spring if they have been retained for winter interest.

Common Problems

Groundbreaker® Greeny™ is generally straightforward to grow when provided with sufficient moisture.

• Wilting and leaf scorch can occur if the soil becomes excessively dry.
• Poor flowering may result from insufficient light or excessive feeding with high-nitrogen fertiliser.
• Waterlogging can damage the root system.
• Aphids may occasionally appear on fresh growth.
• Powdery mildew can occur where plants are overcrowded and air circulation is poor.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
