About Hydrangea 'Groundbreaker® Ruby'

Hydrangea paniculata 'Groundbreaker® Ruby' is an innovative low-growing panicle hydrangea combining the spectacular flowers of traditional Hydrangea paniculata with a compact, spreading habit.

Large flower panicles emerge in lighter shades before gradually developing attractive pink and rich ruby-red tones as the season progresses. This changing flower colour creates a long-lasting display from summer well into autumn.

Growing to approximately 30–50cm tall with a spread of around 60–80cm, Groundbreaker® Ruby is particularly useful as flowering ground cover, at the front of borders and in patio containers.

Planting Guide

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.
• Good light encourages strong flowering and rich late-season colour.
• In warmer positions, some afternoon shade can help prevent excessive drying.
• Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.
• Suitable for most garden soils when drainage is adequate.
• Improve the planting area with compost or well-rotted organic matter.
• Dig a hole approximately twice the width of the root ball.
• Position the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil.
• Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly.
• Apply an organic mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
• Space plants approximately 60–80cm apart when creating low mass planting.

Care & Maintenance

Groundbreaker® Ruby is relatively easy to maintain and performs best when supplied with consistent moisture.

• Water regularly during the first growing season.
• Keep plants well watered during prolonged warm or dry weather.
• Container-grown specimens should not be allowed to dry out completely.
• Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
• Apply compost or well-rotted organic matter around established plants each spring.
• Maintain a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and keep the roots cool.
• Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Pruning

Like other Hydrangea paniculata, Groundbreaker® Ruby flowers on new growth produced during the current season.

• Prune in late winter or early spring.
• Remove dead, damaged or weak stems.
• Shorten the previous year's growth to encourage strong new flowering shoots.
• As this is naturally a very compact Hydrangea, heavy pruning is generally unnecessary.
• Faded flower heads can be left in place over winter for decorative interest and removed during spring pruning.

Common Problems

Groundbreaker® Ruby is generally easy to grow when provided with suitable soil and moisture.

• Wilting and leaf scorch can occur if plants become excessively dry.
• Poor flowering may result from too much shade.
• Excessive nitrogen fertiliser can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
• Permanently waterlogged soil can cause root problems.
• Aphids may occasionally appear on fresh shoots.
• Powdery mildew can sometimes develop where air circulation is restricted.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
