• Botanical Name: Hydrangea paniculata mix

• Common Name: Mixed Panicle Hydrangeas

• Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub

• Growth Habit: Upright, bushy form with a strong, woody framework; height and spread vary between varieties, generally ranging from 1–2.5 metres.

• Foliage: Medium to deep green, ovate leaves that provide a fresh backdrop for the showy blooms.

• Flowers: Large, cone-shaped clusters (panicles) in shades of creamy white, lime green, soft pink, rose, and deep red, depending on the variety. Blooms often change colour through the season.

• Flowering Period: July to September, sometimes lasting into October.

• Seasonal Interest: Fresh green foliage in spring, spectacular flower displays in summer, rich colour tones in autumn, and attractive seed heads in winter if left unpruned.

• Garden Uses: Excellent for mixed borders, specimen planting, flowering hedges, and large containers. Ideal for cut flowers, fresh or dried.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Best in full sun to partial shade; at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight promotes strong flowering.

• Soil Preferences: Fertile, moisture-retentive, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter.

• pH Range: Neutral to slightly acidic (pH 5.5–7.0). Unlike Hydrangea macrophylla, soil pH does not influence bloom colour in H. paniculata.

• Moisture Needs: Consistent moisture is important—avoid both drought and waterlogging.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or autumn when conditions are mild and soil is workable.

• Spacing: Allow 1–2.5 metres between plants, depending on variety and mature size.

• Shelter Needs: Choose a spot sheltered from strong winds to protect large blooms.

• Companion Planting: Looks beautiful with ornamental grasses, roses, ferns, and late-summer perennials such as echinacea and rudbeckia.

• Container Growing: Many compact H. paniculata varieties in the mix are suitable for large pots; use a loam-based compost and ensure excellent drainage.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water deeply once or twice weekly in dry weather, especially for new plants and those in pots.

  • Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy.

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms.

  • Boost flowering with a high-potash liquid feed every 4–6 weeks during summer.

• Pruning:

  • Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.

  • Cut stems back to a strong pair of buds about one-third from the base to stimulate fresh shoots and large flowers.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm layer of compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure around the base in spring to retain moisture and improve soil structure.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally trouble-free; occasional aphid or mildew issues may occur—treat promptly if necessary.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy; mulch in colder areas to protect roots and retain soil moisture.

• Weed Control: Keep the root zone weed-free to minimise competition for water and nutrients.

• Longevity: With proper care, plants in the Hydrangea paniculata mix will reward you with spectacular floral displays for many years, making them a standout feature in any garden.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
