Description and Characteristics

Hypericum Magical™ is a modern series of compact, ornamental St. John's Wort varieties bred for both decorative berries and flowers. These shrubs are grown primarily for their long-lasting, colourful fruit, which follow a show of cheerful yellow flowers in summer. The Magical™ range includes varieties such as ‘Magical Red Flame’, ‘Magical Beauty’, ‘Magical Universe’, and ‘Magical White’, each selected for unique berry colour, leaf tint, or compactness.

Each plant produces bright yellow, star-shaped flowers from June to August, attracting pollinators. These are followed by dense clusters of glossy berries in rich shades of red, pink, cream, black, or white, depending on the cultivar. The berries persist into autumn and are a favourite for florists, adding seasonal colour to borders and arrangements.

Hypericum Magical™ varieties typically reach 60–90 cm in height and spread, forming a dense, rounded mound. Their semi-evergreen foliage may retain leaves in mild winters, and they are well-suited to urban gardens, containers, beds, and mixed borders.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Hypericum Magical™ varieties are easy to grow, low maintenance, and adaptable to a range of garden conditions. They are valued for their drought tolerance, resilience, and ornamental performance.

• Light Requirements:

  • Best in full sun to partial shade

  • Berry and flower production is most prolific in sunny locations

  • Tolerates some shade but may result in reduced flowering

• Soil Preferences:

  • Prefers moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil

  • Tolerates a wide range of soil types including loam, clay, and sandy soils

  • pH adaptable – grows well in neutral to slightly acidic or alkaline conditions

• Watering Needs:

  • Water well during the first year to establish roots

  • Once established, moderately drought-tolerant

  • Avoid very dry or overly soggy conditions

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support flowering and fruiting

  • Mulch annually with compost to conserve moisture and improve soil texture

• Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Prune in early spring to shape and encourage new growth

  • Cut back older stems to maintain a compact, bushy habit

  • Remove spent flowers to improve berry set (optional)

• Winter Care:

  • Hardy in Zones 6–9 (RHS H5–H6)

  • Semi-evergreen: may retain leaves in mild climates

  • In colder areas, leaves may drop but the plant regrows reliably in spring

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
