About Knautia 'Thunder & Lightning'®

Knautia 'Thunder & Lightning'® is a striking variegated perennial, valued for its attractive cream-edged foliage and long-lasting pincushion-like flowers. Throughout early summer until early autumn, it produces masses of soft lavender-pink blooms held on slender, upright stems above its eye-catching foliage, creating movement and colour in the garden.

Growing to approximately 60–80cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm, this compact, clump-forming perennial offers interest long before it flowers thanks to its distinctive green leaves edged with creamy white. The nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. Its elegant flowers are also excellent for cutting and naturalistic planting schemes.

Planting Guide

• Plant in full sun for the best flowering and foliage colour.
• Will tolerate light partial shade.
• Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
• Suitable for loam, sandy and chalky soils.
• Improve heavy clay soils by adding compost and horticultural grit before planting.
• Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
• Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
• Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
• Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
• Apply a light mulch around the base to retain moisture while keeping the crown clear.
• Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart.

• Water regularly during the first growing season.
• Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.
• Avoid waterlogged soil during winter.
• Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
