Description and Characteristics

Kniphofia ‘Lemon Popsicle’ is a compact and prolific-flowering variety from the Popsicle Series, bred for long bloom time, manageable size, and bright, refreshing colour. It features lemon-yellow flower spikes that resemble frozen treats—hence the name—with neat, upright stems and a tidy mound of narrow green foliage.

Unlike traditional taller Kniphofia cultivars, ‘Lemon Popsicle’ is dwarf in habit, reaching only 40–50 cm in height with a spread of 30–40 cm. This makes it exceptionally well-suited for small gardens, containers, front-of-border plantings, and urban designs.

It begins flowering in early summer (June) and continues through to early autumn (September) with minimal maintenance. Its torch-like blooms emerge from green buds and mature into a sunny yellow display that’s highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

  • Compact, upright form with lemon-yellow blooms

  • Height: 40–50 cm; Spread: 30–40 cm

  • Long flowering period: June to September

  • Clump-forming with fine, grassy green foliage

  • Ideal for containers, small borders, and pollinator gardens

  • A standout member of the Popsicle Series for longevity and colour

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Kniphofia ‘Lemon Popsicle’ is an easy-care, drought-tolerant perennial that thrives in sunny locations with good drainage. Its compact size makes it highly adaptable to a variety of garden situations.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Requires full sun (minimum 6 hours/day) for optimal flowering

    • Tolerates very light shade, though blooming may be reduced

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil

    • Avoid heavy clay or consistently wet conditions, especially in winter

    • Neutral to slightly acidic pH is ideal

  • Watering Needs:

    • Water regularly during the first growing season

    • Once established, it is drought-tolerant

    • Allow soil to dry between waterings and avoid overhead irrigation

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring as growth resumes

    • Optional: use a high-potash feed during bloom to support continuous flowering

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Remove faded flower spikes to encourage new blooms

    • Tidy foliage as needed and cut back in late autumn or early spring

    • Do not cut foliage too early in autumn, as it offers winter protection

  • Winter Care:

    • Hardy in Zones 6–9 (RHS H4); apply mulch in colder areas

    • In very wet climates, raise beds or plant on mounds to improve drainage

    • Can be grown in containers and moved to sheltered locations if needed

  • Dividing and Replanting:

    • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in early spring or after flowering

    • Helps maintain vigour and encourages strong bloom production
