Overview and Features

Lavatera ‘Burgundy Wine’, also known as tree mallow, is a vigorous, bushy deciduous shrub known for its striking deep pink to burgundy-purple flowers and fast-growing nature. This variety offers a long season of colour with its hibiscus-like blooms, which appear continuously from early summer to autumn.

A favourite in cottage-style and wildlife gardens, 'Burgundy Wine' features softly lobed, grey-green foliage that forms a large, rounded mound. The showy flowers are not only eye-catching but also a rich source of nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

This plant is ideal for sunny borders, informal hedging, or as a standalone feature shrub, typically growing to around 1.5–2 metres tall and wide, depending on pruning and site conditions.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Lavatera 'Burgundy Wine' is easy to grow and requires minimal care, making it ideal for beginners and low-maintenance gardeners.

• Light Requirements:

  • Requires full sun for best flowering performance

  • Can tolerate light partial shade, though blooms may be fewer

• Soil Preferences:

  • Grows well in moist but well-drained soil

  • Tolerates poor or sandy soils if drainage is good

  • Avoid heavy, wet sites especially in winter

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during establishment

  • Once established, it is drought-tolerant

  • In containers, water during prolonged dry periods

• Feeding:

  • Not a heavy feeder

  • Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support new growth

• Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Prune hard in early spring (March) to encourage bushy growth and more flowers

  • Remove dead or damaged stems after winter

  • Cutting back to 30–50 cm above ground level each year maintains shape and vigour

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
