This plant is particularly beloved for its ability to thrive in both sunny and partially shaded locations, making it a versatile and adaptable choice for various garden settings.
Key Features of Lobelia 'Queen Victoria'
-
Vibrant Scarlet Blooms: Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' is renowned for its brilliant scarlet-red flowers, which appear in tall spikes from mid-summer to early autumn. These vivid blooms attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.
-
Striking Dark Foliage: Complementing its vibrant flowers, 'Queen Victoria' features dark burgundy to bronze foliage that provides a stunning contrast. The rich, deep color of the leaves makes this plant a standout in any garden, adding depth and interest even when not in bloom.
-
Upright Growth Habit: This variety of Lobelia grows in a tall, upright habit, reaching heights of up to 90-120 cm (36-48 inches). The plant spreads to about 30-45 cm (12-18 inches), making it ideal for the middle or back of borders where its height can create a dramatic vertical element.
-
Water-Loving Nature: Unlike many perennials, Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' thrives in moist, even boggy conditions, making it an excellent choice for planting near ponds, streams, or in other damp areas of the garden. However, it also performs well in regular garden beds with adequate watering.
-
Long Blooming Period: One of the key attractions of 'Queen Victoria' is its extended blooming season. The plant begins to flower in mid-summer and continues well into early autumn, providing a long-lasting display of color in the garden.
Planting and Care for Lobelia 'Queen Victoria'
Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' is relatively easy to care for, provided its basic needs are met. Here’s how to keep your plant looking its best:
-
Height and Spread: This Lobelia variety typically grows to a height of 90-120 cm (36-48 inches) with a spread of 30-45 cm (12-18 inches), making it a great choice for adding height and structure to your garden beds and borders.
-
Planting Location: Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' prefers a location with full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent the foliage from scorching. This plant is especially well-suited to damp, boggy areas, so consider planting it near water features or in a rain garden.
-
Soil Requirements: The key to success with Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' is to plant it in moist, rich, well-drained soil. This Lobelia thrives in soils that retain moisture but do not become waterlogged. Adding organic matter to the soil before planting can help improve its moisture-retention capabilities.
-
Watering: This plant has a high moisture requirement and should be watered regularly, especially during dry spells. While it can tolerate brief periods of drought, prolonged dryness will negatively impact its growth and flowering. For best results, maintain consistently moist soil throughout the growing season.
-
Fertilization: To encourage strong growth and abundant flowering, feed Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. A second application in mid-summer can help sustain its performance through the blooming period. Alternatively, you can apply a liquid feed every few weeks during the growing season.
-
Pruning: After the flowering period, it's beneficial to cut back the spent flower spikes to encourage a second flush of blooms. In late autumn, trim the plant back to ground level. This helps it conserve energy over winter and promotes healthy growth in the spring.
-
Pest and Disease Resistance: Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' is generally pest-resistant. However, it can be susceptible to slugs and snails, especially in damp conditions. Using organic slug pellets or placing barriers around the plants can help protect them. Ensuring good air circulation and avoiding overcrowding can help prevent potential fungal issues.
