Lupinus Gallery Mix Varieties – Planting & Care Guide
About Lupinus Gallery Mix Varieties
Lupinus Gallery Mix Varieties, commonly known as Gallery Lupins, are compact, free-flowering perennials that produce impressive upright flower spikes in a vibrant mix of colours including white, cream, yellow, pink, red, purple, blue and bi-coloured shades. Unlike traditional lupins, the Gallery series has been specially bred to produce a shorter, bushier habit while maintaining spectacular flower displays.
Flowering from late spring into early summer, with a second flush often possible after deadheading, these colourful plants grow to approximately 45–60cm tall with a spread of 35–45cm. Their attractive palmate foliage provides excellent texture throughout the season, while the nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects. Their compact size makes them ideal for borders, containers and smaller gardens.
Planting Guide
- Plant in full sun for the best flowering display.
- Will tolerate light partial shade.
- Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds.
- Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.

- Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils during winter.
- Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
- Carefully remove the plant from its container without disturbing the roots.
- Position the crown level with the surrounding soil surface.
- Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
- Space plants approximately 35–45cm apart.
Care & Maintenance

- Water regularly during the first growing season.
- Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
- Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
- Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilisers, which encourage foliage instead of flowers.
- Mulch annually with compost to retain moisture and improve soil fertility.
- Remove weeds regularly from around the plants.
- Taller flower spikes may benefit from support in exposed gardens.
- Avoid disturbing mature plants, as they develop deep taproots.
Pruning
Regular pruning helps prolong the flowering season.
- Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage repeat flowering.
- Cut flowering stems back to the base once blooms have faded.
- Remove damaged or yellowing foliage throughout the growing season.
- Cut plants back after the foliage dies down in autumn.
- Leave healthy basal foliage until it naturally dies back.
