Planting Lupinus ‘West Country Masterpiece’
Lupinus ‘West Country Masterpiece’ is a striking perennial known for its tall, elegant spires of richly coloured flowers, often in deep pinks and reds. It is ideal for adding height and drama to borders and works particularly well in cottage garden schemes.
Choosing the right position
- Prefers full sun for best flowering performance
- Will tolerate light partial shade, though flowering may be reduced
- Choose a sheltered position to protect tall flower spikes from strong winds
- Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and wildlife-friendly planting
- Avoid overly exposed sites where stems may require staking
Soil requirements
- Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil
- Prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions
- Does not perform well in heavy, waterlogged soils
- Avoid very chalky or alkaline soils
- Improve soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting
How to plant in the ground
- Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the long taproot
- Take care not to damage the root when planting
- Position the plant so the crown sits at soil level
- Backfill with enriched soil and firm gently
- Water thoroughly after planting
- Space plants around 40–50cm apart
Planting in containers
- Use a deep container to allow room for root development
- Fill with a free-draining, fertile compost
- Ensure good drainage at the base of the pot
- Water well after planting
- Place in a sunny, sheltered location
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
Lupinus ‘Masterpiece’ is relatively easy to grow and rewards with a bold and colourful display when properly cared for.
Watering
- Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells
- Water regularly during the growing season
- Container-grown plants require more frequent watering
- Avoid letting the soil dry out completely
- Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot
Feeding
- Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support strong growth
- Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, as these encourage foliage over flowers
- A light feed after the first flowering can encourage a second flush
- Container plants benefit from occasional liquid feeding
- Avoid overfeeding, which can reduce flowering quality
Staking and support
- Tall flower spikes may require support in exposed areas
- Use discreet stakes or plant supports early in the season
- Surround with other plants to provide natural shelter
- Tie loosely to avoid damaging stems
Deadheading and pruning
- Remove spent flower spikes promptly to encourage further blooms
- Cut back to a healthy leaf joint after flowering
- Trim back faded stems to maintain a tidy appearance
- Allow some flowers to go to seed if desired for natural spread
Seasonal Care and Common Issues
With the right care, Lupinus ‘West Country Masterpiece’ will provide vibrant colour and structure from late spring into early summer.
Seasonal interest
- Produces tall, colourful flower spikes in late spring and early summer
- May produce a second flush of flowers if deadheaded
- Attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies
- Adds vertical interest and bold colour to borders
Winter care
- Dies back in autumn and re-emerges in spring
- Cut back old foliage after it has died down
- Apply mulch in autumn to protect roots in colder areas
- Ensure soil remains well-drained during winter
- Avoid waterlogging, which can damage roots
Common problems
- Slugs and snails may damage young shoots in spring
- Aphids can occasionally affect flower spikes
- Powdery mildew may occur in dry or crowded conditions
- Poor flowering may result from shade or overfeeding
- Plants can be relatively short-lived, so consider replanting every few years
