Planting Magnolia soulangeana ‘Satisfaction’

Magnolia soulangeana ‘Satisfaction’ is a compact deciduous magnolia valued for its large, goblet-shaped spring flowers. The blooms are typically pink on the outside and paler within, creating a striking two-toned display before or as the new leaves emerge. Its relatively controlled growth makes it suitable for lawns, sheltered borders, courtyards and smaller gardens.

• Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade. Good light supports abundant flowering, but shelter from strong morning sun can protect frosted buds from thawing too rapidly.
• Select a site protected from cold, drying winds and severe late frosts. A sheltered position helps preserve the early flowers.
• Allow sufficient room for the plant’s mature height and spread. Magnolias dislike frequent relocation, so choose the permanent site carefully.
• Plant in fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Slightly acidic to neutral ground is ideal, although mildly alkaline soil may be tolerated.
• Avoid shallow, extremely chalky or permanently waterlogged locations. Improve heavy or poor soil with well-rotted organic matter before planting.
• Water the root ball thoroughly. Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the roots but no deeper than the existing root ball.
• Position the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Magnolias are shallow-rooted and should not be planted too deeply.
• Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously. Apply a 5–8 cm layer of composted bark or leaf mould, keeping it clear of the stem.
• Stake a young tree only if necessary, using a low stake and soft tie that allows some natural movement.

Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care

Magnolia ‘Satisfaction’ performs best where the soil remains evenly moist without becoming saturated. Reliable watering is particularly important while the roots are establishing and during prolonged dry weather.

• Water regularly during the first two growing seasons. Apply water slowly and deeply across the root area rather than concentrating it beside the trunk.
• Continue watering established plants during hot, dry or windy periods. Drought can cause scorched leaf edges, premature leaf fall and poor flower-bud development.
• Check container-grown specimens frequently. Use a large, stable container with drainage holes and do not allow the compost to dry completely.
• Water containers thoroughly until moisture drains from the base, then empty any saucer or decorative outer pot.
• Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring if the soil is poor or growth appears weak. Established plants in fertile ground need little additional feeding.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth and may reduce flowering or produce shoots vulnerable to frost.
• Renew the organic mulch annually in spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve the soil.
• Keep grass and weeds away from the root zone. Magnolia roots grow close to the surface and compete poorly with dense surrounding vegetation.
• Do not dig or hoe deeply beneath the canopy, as this can damage the shallow, fleshy roots.
• Protect young flower buds from severe late frost where practical, particularly when the plant is growing in a container.

Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

‘Satisfaction’ naturally develops an attractive framework and needs little routine pruning. Unnecessary or severe cutting can spoil its shape and may result in vigorous, poorly positioned shoots.

• Prune only when required to remove dead, damaged, diseased, crossing or badly placed branches.
• Complete light pruning immediately after flowering or during midsummer. Cuts made in winter or early spring may bleed sap and remove flower buds.
• Use clean, sharp tools and make each cut just outside the branch collar. Avoid leaving long stubs or cutting flush against the trunk.
• Remove larger branches gradually over several seasons rather than attempting extensive renovation in one year.
• Check ties and stakes regularly. Loosen any tie that begins to restrict the expanding trunk and remove the support once the roots are secure.
• Inspect young growth for aphids, scale insects and signs of fungal spotting. Serious pest and disease problems are uncommon in suitable conditions.
• Yellow leaves may indicate waterlogging, drought, nutrient deficiency or soil that is too alkaline. Assess drainage and growing conditions before adding fertiliser.
• Brown or damaged flowers are commonly caused by frost, wind or heavy rain rather than disease. Remove spoiled blooms if they become unsightly.
• Fallen leaves can be collected and composted unless they show significant disease. A light layer may also decompose naturally beneath the tree.
• Avoid transplanting established magnolias because their brittle, fleshy roots resent disturbance.
• With a sheltered position, fertile soil, dependable moisture and minimal pruning, Magnolia soulangeana ‘Satisfaction’ will mature into an elegant spring-flowering feature that provides many years of colour and structure

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
