Planting Magnolia × soulangeana (50–60cm)

Magnolia × soulangeana, commonly known as Saucer Magnolia, is a beautiful deciduous tree or large shrub admired for its large, tulip-shaped flowers in shades of pink and white. Even at 50–60cm, it will establish into a striking focal point over time.

Choosing the right position

• Prefers full sun to partial shade
• Best flowering occurs in a bright, sheltered position
• Protect from strong winds, which can damage early blooms
• Avoid frost pockets, as late frosts can affect flowers
• Ideal as a specimen plant in lawns or mixed borders

Soil requirements

• Thrives in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil
• Prefers fertile, humus-rich conditions
• Avoid chalky or strongly alkaline soils
• Does not tolerate waterlogged or compacted ground
• Improve soil with compost, leaf mould, or well-rotted manure

How to plant

• Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower than its depth
• Position the plant so the root ball sits just above soil level
• Backfill with enriched soil and firm gently
• Water thoroughly after planting
• Apply a mulch of bark or leaf mould to retain moisture
• Avoid disturbing roots, as magnolias prefer minimal disturbance

Planting in containers (young plants only)

• Use a large container with good drainage holes
• Fill with ericaceous or loam-based compost
• Keep soil consistently moist
• Repot as the plant grows to prevent root restriction

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
