Monarda 'Cambridge Scarlet' – Planting & Care Guide

About Monarda 'Cambridge Scarlet'

Monarda 'Cambridge Scarlet', commonly known as Bergamot or Bee Balm, is a vigorous herbaceous perennial prized for its spectacular whorls of bright scarlet-red flowers. The distinctive blooms are carried on upright stems above aromatic, deep green foliage and create a bold display from mid to late summer.

The flowers are exceptionally attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, making this an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens. The aromatic foliage releases a pleasant fragrance when crushed.

Growing to approximately 90–120cm tall with a spread of 45–60cm, 'Cambridge Scarlet' is particularly effective towards the middle or back of perennial borders.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun or partial shade.
  • Best flowering generally occurs in full sun.
  • Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.
  • Monarda dislikes becoming excessively dry during summer.
  • Incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Dig a planting hole approximately twice the width of the root ball.
  • Position the plant at the same depth as it was growing in its container.
  • Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply an organic mulch to conserve moisture.
  • Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart to maintain good air circulation.

Care & Maintenance

Consistent moisture is particularly important for healthy Monarda plants.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Keep established plants well watered during prolonged dry weather.
  • Apply compost or well-rotted organic matter around plants each spring.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if required.
  • Maintain a layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and moist.
  • Avoid overcrowding plants, as good airflow helps keep the foliage healthy.
  • Water at soil level where possible rather than repeatedly wetting the leaves.

Pruning

Regular maintenance encourages a long flowering display and healthy new growth.

  • Deadhead faded flowers to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage further blooms.
  • Cut stems back to ground level after they die back in autumn.
  • Alternatively, leave old stems over winter and remove them in early spring.
  • Divide established clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour and control their spread.
  • Remove weak or overcrowded stems if necessary to improve air circulation.

Common Problems

Monarda 'Cambridge Scarlet' is generally robust, but attention to moisture and airflow is important.

  • Powdery mildew is the most common problem, particularly during dry weather or where plants are overcrowded.
  • Keeping the roots consistently moist helps reduce mildew stress.
  • Allow adequate spacing between plants for good air circulation.
  • Slugs and snails may occasionally damage young spring shoots.
  • Prolonged waterlogging can cause root problems.
  • Established clumps can spread through underground rhizomes and may need dividing every few years.

With its brilliant scarlet flowers, aromatic foliage and exceptional appeal to pollinating insects, Monarda 'Cambridge Scarlet' is an outstanding perennial for Irish gardens. It is especially effective in cottage and wildlife gardens, where its tall summer flowers create a dramatic display while providing an excellent nectar source for bees and butterflies
