• Common Name: Heavenly Bamboo ‘Lemon & Lime’

• Plant Type: Compact evergreen shrub, valued for its fresh foliage colour and low-maintenance nature.

• Growth Habit: Upright and bushy; typically grows to 90–120 cm in height and spread, making it ideal for borders, pots, or as a feature plant.

• Foliage: Soft, bamboo-like leaves emerge in vivid lime-green in spring, maturing to chartreuse, and remaining bright all year. Unlike many nandinas, this variety does not produce red autumn colour but maintains its lemon-lime tones.

• Flowers: Small, white blooms may appear in summer in older plants, followed by occasional red berries.

• Seasonal Interest: Year-round foliage colour provides continuous garden brightness, particularly in shaded or dull corners.

• Garden Uses: Perfect for low hedging, mixed borders, patio containers, and modern garden designs.

• Wildlife Value: Flowers may attract pollinators; berries (if produced) can be a food source for birds.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; leaf colour remains vibrant even in lower light but is brightest in dappled sun.

• Soil Preferences: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil; will tolerate light clay if improved with organic matter.

• pH Range: Neutral to slightly acidic is ideal, though adaptable.

• Moisture Needs: Requires moderate watering during establishment; avoid prolonged waterlogging.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn, allowing roots to establish before hot or freezing weather.

• Spacing: For mass planting or hedging, space 50–60 cm apart.

• Shelter Needs: Suitable for exposed or sheltered spots; foliage is wind-tolerant but benefits from protection in very harsh sites.

• Companion Planting: Pairs beautifully with Heuchera, Carex, Hosta, Pieris, and Hydrangea for mixed texture and colour contrast.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water well during the first growing season to encourage strong root growth.

  • Once established, it is drought-tolerant but will perform better with occasional deep watering during dry spells.

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and maintain foliage colour.

  • Top-dress containers annually with fresh compost and a multi-purpose feed.

• Pruning:

  • Low maintenance; prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or damaged stems and maintain compact form.

  • Older stems can be cut back to the base every few years to rejuvenate the plant.

• Mulching:

  • Apply a 5 cm layer of organic mulch in spring to help retain moisture, enrich the soil, and reduce weed growth—keep mulch away from direct contact with the stems.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest- and disease-free; occasional aphids or scale insects can be managed with horticultural soap if necessary.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy in most areas; in colder regions, a thick mulch around the base helps protect roots from extreme frost.

• Container Overwintering: If grown in pots, place in a sheltered spot to avoid root freezing.

• Weed Control: Keep the planting area weed-free to ensure nutrients are directed to the plant.

• Longevity: A long-lasting, easy-care shrub that maintains its bright lime-green foliage for many years with minimal effort.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
