Planting Your Narcissus Mix
A net of 500 mixed Narcissus bulbs provides a substantial spring display in varied colours, flower shapes and heights. Commonly known as daffodils or narcissi, these hardy bulbs are suitable for borders, lawns, banks, woodland edges, containers and large-scale naturalised planting. Different varieties may flower at slightly different times, extending the overall display.
-
Plant the bulbs during autumn, ideally from September to November, before the ground becomes frozen or waterlogged.
-
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Sites beneath deciduous trees are suitable because the bulbs receive spring light before the overhead leaves develop.
-
Select fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Narcissus bulbs tolerate various soil types but may rot in permanently saturated ground.
-
Improve heavy clay with organic matter and horticultural grit. Add well-rotted compost to poor, sandy soil.
-
Plant each bulb at a depth approximately two to three times its own height, generally leaving 10–15 cm of soil above it.
-
Position bulbs with the pointed ends facing upwards and the flatter root plates at the bottom.
-
Space bulbs approximately 10–15 cm apart in formal beds. Wider, irregular spacing creates a more natural effect in lawns and banks.
-
For 500 bulbs, divide the site into measured sections before planting to achieve even distribution.
-
Create generous drifts rather than planting isolated bulbs. Scatter them gently across naturalised areas and plant them where they fall.
-
Backfill carefully, firm the soil and water once to settle it around the bulbs.
Watering, Feeding and Flowering Care
Narcissus bulbs require little attention during autumn and winter. Natural rainfall usually provides sufficient moisture, but the soil should not dry severely during active spring growth.
-
Water after planting if the ground is dry. Avoid additional watering when autumn and winter conditions are already wet.
-
Begin watering during spring if rainfall is limited, particularly while leaves, buds and flowers are developing.
-
Apply water deeply across the planted area rather than wetting only the soil surface.
-
Check container-grown bulbs regularly because pots may dry more quickly than open ground.
-
Ensure containers have drainage holes and never leave them standing permanently in water.
-
Apply a balanced bulb fertiliser as shoots emerge if the soil is poor.
-
Feed with a high-potassium fertiliser after flowering to help the bulbs store energy for the following year.
-
Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce lush leaves with fewer flowers.
-
Stop feeding when the foliage begins turning yellow naturally.
-
Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails, especially during mild, damp weather.
-
Remove damaged or diseased flowers promptly to keep large displays tidy and reduce decay.
Aftercare and Naturalising
Correct aftercare allows Narcissus bulbs to return, multiply and produce increasingly impressive displays. The foliage must complete its natural growth cycle after the flowers fade.
-
Remove spent flower heads before seeds develop if strong bulb growth is the priority.
-
Leave all stems and foliage in place until they turn completely yellow and detach easily.
-
Do not knot, fold or cut green leaves. They need sunlight to replenish the bulbs for the following spring.
-
Delay mowing bulbs naturalised through grass for at least six weeks after flowering or until the foliage has died back.
-
Continue watering during dry weather while the leaves remain green, then reduce watering as dormancy begins.
-
Leave bulbs undisturbed where drainage is good. Annual lifting is unnecessary for established naturalised plantings.
-
Lift and divide congested clumps when flowering declines, usually after the foliage dies back in early summer.
-
Separate healthy offsets and replant them immediately at the correct depth.
-
Store lifted bulbs only when necessary. Dry them in a shaded, ventilated location and keep them somewhere cool and dry until autumn.
-
Discard bulbs that are soft, mouldy, damaged or showing signs of narcissus basal rot.
-
Mark different planting areas if the mixture contains varieties of contrasting height or flowering period.
-
Wear gloves when handling large quantities, as Narcissus sap may irritate the skin.
-
Keep bulbs away from children, pets and livestock. Every part of the plant is harmful if eaten and bulbs may be mistaken for onions.
-
With autumn planting, suitable drainage and patient foliage aftercare, this 500-bulb Narcissus mix will create an extensive and increasingly dependable spring display
