    Description

    Planting Requirements and Site Selection

    • Light Requirements: Nepeta ‘Purrsian Blue’ thrives in full sun, which encourages compact growth and abundant flowering. It can tolerate light shade, but flowering may be reduced.

    • Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained soil, and thrives in average to slightly poor soils. It is highly adaptable and will tolerate sandy or rocky conditions. Avoid heavy clay or consistently wet ground.

    • Moisture Needs: Drought-tolerant once established. Requires moderate watering during dry periods in its first year. Avoid overwatering, especially in poorly draining soil.

    • Planting Site: Ideal for sunny borders, cottage gardens, rockeries, or pollinator-friendly plantings. Works beautifully as an edging plant or low mound in front of taller perennials.

    • Planting Time: Plant in spring or early autumn when temperatures are moderate and soil is workable.

    • Spacing: Space plants 18–24 inches apart to allow air circulation and room for the natural mounding growth habit.

    Seasonal Care, Pruning, and Maintenance

    • Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once rooted, the plant is low-maintenance and rarely needs supplemental watering except during long droughts.

    • Feeding: Nepeta generally does not require heavy feeding. An annual application of compost or a light feeding with a balanced fertilizer in early spring will support healthy growth.

    • Mulching: Apply a light layer of mulch to conserve soil moisture and prevent weeds. Avoid mulching directly against the crown to prevent rot.

    • Pruning: Shear back by half after the first main flush of blooms in early to midsummer to encourage fresh growth and a second wave of flowering. Cut back completely to the ground in late autumn or early spring.

    • Deadheading: Not necessary for this variety as it is self-cleaning, but light trimming after flowering will tidy its appearance and may stimulate reblooming.

    • Pest and Disease Resistance: Very resistant to pests and diseases. Rarely bothered by insects and is not susceptible to common fungal problems.

    • Deer and Rabbit Resistant: Strongly aromatic foliage deters browsing by deer and rabbits, making it ideal for rural or open gardens.

    Ornamental Features and Landscape Use

    • Flowering Season: Blooms from late spring to early autumn, with a long-lasting display of soft lavender-blue flowers held on short, upright spikes.

    • Foliage: Features aromatic, grey-green foliage that is finely textured and softly fuzzy to the touch. The leaves emit a pleasant minty scent when brushed against or crushed.

    • Growth Habit and Size: Forms a compact, mounded clump, reaching approximately 12–14 inches tall and 18–24 inches wide. Ideal for edging paths or creating soft borders.

    • Pollinator Friendly: Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. An excellent addition to wildlife or pollinator gardens.

    • Design Uses: Works well in herbaceous borders, rock gardens, containers, and as a groundcover. Complements roses, salvias, and ornamental grasses beautifully.

    • Container Suitability: Performs well in pots and planters, provided drainage is excellent. Pair with sun-loving perennials or herbs for a fragrant and colourful display.

    • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 3–8 (UK H7). Easily withstands cold winters and hot summers once established.
